Conyers and Grayson" War is Making You Poor Act"

It seems that Rep. John Conyers (D-MI) would agree, perpetual war is making you poor.

To begin rectifying the situation, he's joined with Congressman Alan Grayson (D-FL) in co-sponsoring the "War is Making You Poor Act," which would limit defense spending to $548.9 billion: the exact figure alloted in the fiscal year 2011 budget.

The act also seeks to utilize an additional $159.3 billion set aside for "discretionary" operations abroad to relieve the full federal income tax burden on every American's first $35,000 earned per year, or up to $70,000 per year for married couples.

According to Detroit publication MLive, Conyers, who chairs the powerful House Committee on the Judiciary, is adding his name to the roster of support.

but I noticed that the resources implicit in our occupations are not addressed. Hence, good intentions posing as a cover-up?

What will we do to show them that we don't need the oil and other resources that, despite the great profits for companies involved in the invasions, are still held as sacred and essential for even the most decrepit of modern lifestyles? You can't end these conflicts without stopping the need for what is being taken from those who occupy the soil, ey? Oh, so they didn't tell you. That would be rude and crude so think about spreading freedom and democracy instead, since it is more palatable to the many in television induced sleep punctuated by pharmaceuticals, beer, acquisition of stuff and topped off by status seeking and subsidized by a cornucopia of illicit substances and thoughts.

There are many things making us poor and I could list them easily. We have a scarcity-based economy with corporations worshiping their bottom-line as sacrosanct while ignoring the obvious and implicit circle of reciprocity on which human endeavors ultimately depend. Oneupmanship and competition as sole reasons for living have their own outcome and we are all clearly seeing the results day by day now in a stark and sickening miasma of loss and dissolution for that majority that are the losers of the prevailing game gone wild.

It could do substantially the same things with a positive message association. Imagine the fun you could have campaigning against a GOP rep who voted against "peace and prosperity"! That'd be nearly as juicy as voting against the PATRIOT act. With "war is making you poor", all the naysayers have to do for a counter is say, "war is keeping you safe." It may seem weak, but they've used it before and beaten us.

I'm very much in favor of a straight 100% deduction up to the median income level, advocated it on this forum before - this bill is a great start in that respect. I hope the proponents fix the messaging so it gets some momentum.

you are being made poor, maybe homeless, maybe starving, might start waking up those who believe war is in our nations best interest. Because how can we be safe if we are homeless?

And its going to force the issue of the gargantuan defense budgets into the public eye. The same public who is hurting from unemployment and the termination of benefits.
