Rage frontman’s Arizona boycott swells to nearly 300 artists

Rage Against the Machine frontman Zack de la Roca is no stranger to shredding public policy in his line of work: indeed, rebel music has been the man's lifeblood for decades. Though already a legend in the music world, this is one socially motivated rocker who is not about to stop screaming for change.

De la Roca's latest endeavor, The Sound Strike, pitches him as not just the frontman to the most politically relevant mainstream rock group in the world, but also as the loudest voice encapsulating a charge of hundreds of artists and music groups that have agreed to boycott the state of Arizona over its crackdown on Mexican immigrants.

Since RAW STORY's last report on the group, Sound Strike's list of artists who've joined the boycott has swelled to nearly 300, with new names being added seemingly every day.

So far, artists to sign on for the boycott include major acts like Cypress Hill, Kanye West, Chris Rock, Connor Oberst, Rage Against the Machine, Serj Tankian, Nine Inch Nails, Rise Against, Maroon 5, Massive Attack, Sonic Youth, Anti-Flag, Ozomatli, Tenacious D and many others.

The next step will be to use state funds to build a huge barbed wire fence along the border. If the federal government doesn't want to enforce existing laws, then Arizona will do it for them.

Boy-cots don't werrrk!

The music, if you can call it that ( ok, Rage and NIN were the shit a decade and a half ago ), boycott, as well as the business boycotts who cancel their trips or business with companies based in AZ, only hurt the service industry. I guess, over time, that hurt might tricke-up to the most powerful, but that's a zany way to express disapproval. Rage should play Phoenix, and say what they think to the people of AZ.

It's ideological theater. These bands are more interested in making a statement and feeling good about themselves than they are interested in helping anyone.

And Zack is still the man.

Unless you count KISS or Metallica or Maiden, that is...

In general I support the boycott - it might at least wake up some younger fans who would otherwise not be paying attention to the issue. And I am disappointed that Massive Attack won't be coming any time soon. But let's be realistic - at least 250 of the bands on that list have never played in Arizona and never would regardless of the boycott - they've just added their names for free publicity.

There are far more disturbing things happening down here that the AZ Immigration legislation. By boycotting the State people are allowing the real nasty stuff to go unreported...MSNBC and Rachel Maddow should be ashamed of themselves, if ever a journalist has been shown up for an insensitive hypocrite, Rachel Maddow fits that bill, at least Limbaugh stands by his principles,Maddow is Full Of Shit...

Well, I'm a legal immigrant, and I support the Arizona law. I don't see why the illegals can't follow the law, and apply at a US consulate like many of us do. This illegal alien flap just creates hassles for legal immigrants. And they do take jobs we could do, they take sub-standard wages, and allow rich folk to get away with murder. To me, this illegal alien issue is driven by rich folk who want cheap maids and construction workers, and don't give a damn about US blue collar workers. Those musicians, as far as I'm concerned, can stick their guitars up their noses.

I have never understood how someone can claim to support the working class and then support a problem that only serves to erode and destroy said working class. I am a son of a drywaller who felt the impacts of illegal immigration first hand growing up. Based on my experiences, I can never support illegal immigration.

Would that those same rich folk who give campaign contributions to members of the state legislature. Those rich folk are responsible for getting the laws watered down that they will never be held accountable for the illegals that they hire.

Have you bothered to read the part where it basically says that employers can only be held responsible if they "knowingly" hire an illegal alien to work for them.

Here's the legal definition:

The word “knowingly” in law means consciously or with knowledge or complete understanding of the facts or circumstances.

That burden of proof will be hard for many prosecutors to overcome!


I lived in Arizona from 1997-2005, and while there were rumblings about illegal aliens, it was never so hate filled as it is now.

By the way some of those cheap maids probably work for the hotels that these groups would be staying in, so maybe it's a good thing that this boycott is in place.

immigrant also and I couldn't disagree with you more. I live in Arizona and do not support a law that will lead to profiling. I'm a brown citizen and deserve the rights of any other citizen. I do not want to be treated any differently just because I might fit their profile of an illegal immigrant.

They should have put on a show and given proceeds to sue AZ for the law. Boycotting puts people out of jobs.

Once again the domino affect of losing our Democratic Governor to Homeland Security is destroying our state. I can't wait to get Terry Goddard in the Governor's chair so he can stop the bleeding.

But most of those bands aren't high profile enough to make a damn bit of difference to local promoters. There are significant acts that draw regularly here that are boycotting (Pitbull, Rise Against, Gogol Bordello) but for most of those bands it is just an easy way to get their name in print. In ten years of covering music in Phoenix, I've never seen Jesus Chainsaw Massacre or Los Faggots (both actual bands boycotting the state) on a concert bill.

need to broaden their net. Maybe seek out local talent... Or, better yet, they should put pressure on the legislature to repeal the law. I mean, that is the point after all.

Great show, although the stage didn't do their light show justice, and Daddy G's wife was having a baby, so he wasn't at the show. But they had Beth Fraser and Horace Andy along.

There's a few "names" but I think it's safe to say that at least 95% of those listed would generate a big "who?" from the average music fan.

if they don't want to spend it in a state that passes such laws, then that's their right.

if it gets people to vote differently, then so much the better --AZ has long been known for reelecting brain dead reps to their legislature.

by the way, this is precisely what motivated Arizona to make MLK day a holiday...the NFL and other pro sports were abandoning them.

We may not be as big as Rage Against The Machine, but we tour and our albums are sold in Arizona. No more.

The way things are now, we would boycott you if you start supporting illegals anyway. So might was well stick to states where illegal aliens aren't a big problem.

This boycott won't do any good. Many of the bands listed are small to medium venue performers. Very good bands yet they're considered jabronies in a business sense.

I'll do my part by not voting for Brewer and McCain.
