Democrats Fear They Can't Match $200 Million GOP Campaign Avalanche

Over the past few weeks, top Democratic Party strategists have been passed a chart by a concerned, well-respected operative underscoring the daunting task they face in the 2010 elections.

On the left hand side of the chart is a list of ten Republican aligned institutions, ranging from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce to the Family Research Council. Next to it is a column listing the amount of money each group has pledged to spend by Election Day. A third column on the right details what those groups actually spent in 2008 on federal elections.

The number at the bottom delivers the key message. If their pledges are fulfilled, these ten groups will unleash more than $200 million in election-focused spending -- roughly $37 million more than every single independent group spent on the 2008 presidential campaign combined. This time around, almost every single penny will be going to Republican candidates or causes.

(Update: A Democratic operative makes the case that the total could rise to roughly $300 million if it includes additional pledges for campaign spending from Americans for Prosperity, promising $45 million, the Club for Growth, $24 million, the National Rifle Association, $20 million, and the Susan B. Anthony List, $6 million)

9. your attitude is scarey

I lived in Mississippi for over half a century and I heard that same line over and over each year I lived there. As one would expect the Democrats didn't put out that different of a candidate because the fact was everyone figured each party was the same so why bother. The candidates that would make a difference became unable to make a difference and their supporters got mad and gave up. Look at Mississippi and see how well it worked. Katrina, Oil Gusher and still their elected officals do nothing because they won't support anyone since it doesn't matter and good potential candidates won't run because they know the ones they would need are set in the idea why bother.

We might not get enough to make a difference but we can work to get what progress we can as we also work to get more candidates who will do it, but this attitude only secures the right will continue to control and we have nobody to blame but ourselves.

2. Well, maybe if they did their goddamned jobs and represented the interests of The People
instead of the interests of big business, maybe they'll raise more funding. Or, hell. How about you guys don't fucking recess for a few goddamned weeks knowing that unemployment benefits haven't been extended yet? Fucking sociopaths.

defending their support of that organization.)

The NRA is a tool of the GOP.

5. Gutless bastards
I don't want Republicans to get the satisfaction of winning some Democratic seats, and yes, Democrats are nominally better than Republicans in passing legislation favorable to progress,
but I feel these gutless, conniving bastards have accomplished little to deserve our support or money.

Am I better off than I was two years ago? Not really.
"" four years go? No.
"" eight years ago? No
"" 12 years ago? No

So despite the big Democratic wins in '06 and '08, they have not exactly changed the world. I gues the best argument is that Republicans would have made it that much worse.

16. As I said further down
Campaign contributions are no longer capped.

Congress is now officially for sale. Can you buy it? I can't.

The people who can, I don't particularly like...but this is the cost of capitalism, and why it's not compatible with democracy.

He says jump and the Administration asks how high. Remember how adamant Democrats and especially Speaker Pelosi were about ending War Funding and most especially Supplemental War Spending....Just give them a clear Majority and they would end those wars...Remember?

18. Yes well I'll take the dem's over the GOP any day of the week, month
year or decade...

I know you're frustrated but really, do you remember Speaker Gingrich and his hunt for the penis. Do you think anything would be different?

I can't see why anyone who posts here would prefer Speaker Boner and Dead man walking McConnell over what we have.

If you do, well, then why bother...

14. If they "win", they don't deserve the seats
Right now, we are in power. It appears that the elections in November are already irrevocably fraudulent.

The people demand proper representation. We should make sure they get it next year. In a real democratic system, with justice for all people, not just corporate fatcats and BP lobbyists, we must maintain or expand our control in both the House and the Senate.

Once the economy has been properly stabilized and justice reasserted then we can discuss changing these emergency measures.

The Democratic party already got the solution from Howard Dean; choosing willful ignorance and failure is completely up to them.
