America's Deadliest Sweetener Betrays Millions, Then Hoodwinks You with Name Change

Aspartame has been wreaking silent havoc with people's health for the past 30 years.

Aspartame is the most controversial food additive in history, and its approval for use in food was the most contested in FDA history. In the end, the artificial sweetener was approved, not on scientific grounds, but rather because of strong political and financial pressure. After all, aspartame was previously listed by the Pentagon as a biochemical warfare agent!

It's hard to believe such a chemical would be allowed into the food supply, but it was, and it has been wreaking silent havoc with people's health for the past 30 years.

The truth is, it should never have been released onto the market, and allowing it to remain in the food chain is seriously hurting people -- no matter how many times you rebrand it under fancy new names.

The Deceptive Marketing of Aspartame

Sold commercially under names like NutraSweet, Canderel and now AminoSweet, aspartame can be found in more than 6,000 foods, including soft drinks, chewing gum, table-top sweeteners, diet and diabetic foods, breakfast cereals, jams, sweets, vitamins, prescription and over-the-counter drugs.

12. Second page of the article...
Truly, there is enough evidence showing the dangers of consuming artificial sweeteners to fill an entire book -- which is exactly why I wrote Sweet Deception. If you or your loved ones drink diet beverages or eat diet foods, this book will explain how you've been deceived about the truth behind artificial sweeteners like aspartame and sucralose -- for greed, for profits, and at the expense of your health.

You want evidence of the claims in the article?

That's gonna cost you.

"Sweet Deception" costs $16.97 plus shipping.

24. ffttt...cost me nothing. Google is free. I worked in a reference library.
I know how to track down sources. So you've bought the book? Are the studies incorrect? Is what he saying untrue?

I'm still unclear on how we are sure he is a snake oil salesman.

A snake oil salesman sells you a product he knows is bogus. It will do you no good. But if the studies are correct (and I've read a few on the subject) then how is telling you to stop doing something that is potentially harmful being a snake oil salesman?

If he were telling me that I could eat all the X (read sugar, sucralose, aspartame) I wanted if I just bought his book and followed the "special guidelines", then I'd agree.

But hyperbole on either side of the fence just undercuts the arguments made.

I pointed out that he IS selling something, which you did not see in the article.

He may be the voice in the wilderness speaking the truth, but the fact that he's profiting off of, what he says, is an enormous, evil conspiracy, makes my bullshit detector go off.

on edit: You have to submit your email address to read the complete articles on his web site that are linked to the alternet page.

The Doctor assures you that you "will not be spammed" if you submit your email.

Well, that's a lie, as I received an email entitled, "Five Minutes Watching This Crucial Health Video Could Save Your Life" within seconds. Clicking on the link brings up a page that has, among other things, a featured speech by Ron Paul.

Just another reason not to believe a word this guy says.

5. The something-for-nothing fantasy persists with people.
Look at all this stuff: Olestra, Nutrasweet, saccharin, HFCS, and, I would add fluoride. All of it "good for you" so use as much as you want but awful stuff about it that we can never find the truth because we have to protect bidness.

10. I even had to switch toothpaste brands because of the awful aftertaste
Toms of Maine uses no artificial sweeteners, so even though it costs a lot more, I now buy it.. The well-known brands we all grew up with are all tainted by artificial sweeteners..

The old-timey salt & baking soda concoction is a bit too harsh for my tired old gums:)

2. Aspartame is still called aspartame. One of the companies producing changed a trademark name.

26. Fluoride is toxic too
Probably fine in toothpaste, unless you swallow it. Can't spit out the Nutra-toxin, or it pretty much ruins the whole point of a low calorie artificial sweetener.

35. Yeah, you would think you'd see areas with declining life expectancies
"Although life span has generally increased since 1961, the authors reported, it began to level off or even decline in the 1980s for 4 percent of men and 19 percent of women."

"The study found that from 1961 to 1983, there was little difference in average income for the counties where life expectancy rose at rates above and below the mean. But after 1983, life span rose with wealth. Race may also be a factor. In counties where life expectancy declined, the proportion of African-Americans was higher.

From 1961 to 1983, no county had a statistically significant decline in life expectancy, and reductions in cardiovascular disease led to a generally increasing length of life for both sexes. But after 1983, life expectancy declined an average of 1.3 years in 11 counties for men, and in 180 counties for women."

Your comment is a little reminiscent of that right-wing screed about how none of us wore bike helmets when we were kids, and we were just fine. Yes, we were - except for the ones who weren't.

32. About this "biochemical warfare agent" claim
The internets are covered up with the pronouncement Aspartame is bad for you because it was once listed by the Pentagon as a biochemical warfare agent. Notwithstanding the fact the Pentagon has "biological warfare agents" lists and "chemical warfare agents" lists--never heard of a "biochemical warfare agent" and I've been to NBC school--does anyone have a source for this fact that doesn't loop back to Joseph Mercola? Everything I see uses the exact phraseology Mercola has on his site.
