1. Got me.
Edited on Fri Jul-09-10 12:26 PM by jp11
I thought maybe it was vacation time and then wondered if it was cooler there or something.

EDIT: There seems to be something going on there as a Union leader is there, and IIRC an Ambassador or official from Mexico.

2. Could it be this? Plutocrats Rising-- in Aspen! ...
Plutocrats Rising-- in Aspen! ...

... This morning Digby pointed to the very disturbing new hot thing: demonization of the poor. Looks like you can even color Paul Ryan Barbra. Plutocrats Rising-- in Aspen! From real estate baron Mort Zuckerman to British neo-fascist Niall Ferguson, all the rich and powerful are buying into Ryan's prescription for how to make the world beautiful again-- stop taxing the wealthy and do away with that durn safety net thing. After all, in the worst economic turndown since the Great Depression, who needs a safety net? Aren't the wealthy lucky they helped elect a transpartisan figure like Obama this time, willing EAGER to play the role of Herbert Hoover, instead of someone to shake things up like that commie Roosevelt!

Digby, who didn't get invited, looked at their putrid soiree this morning:

Appropriately, the gossip columnist Lloyd Grove is covering the conclave and reported what they were all so excited about:

(Niall) Ferguson called for what he called “radical” measures. “I can’t emphasize strongly enough the need for radical fiscal reform to restore the incentives for work and remove the incentives for idleness.” He praised “really radical reform of the sort that, for example, Paul Ryan (the ranking Republican on the House Budget Committee) has outlined in his wonderful ‘Roadmap’ for radical, root-and-branch reform not only of the tax system but of the entitlement system” and “unleash entrepreneurial innovation.” Otherwise, Ferguson warned: “Do you want to be a kind of implicit part of the European Union? I’d advise you against it.” ...

Don't Rain On Their Parade

by digby

Alex Pareene reports that the aristocrats have decided that they've just about had enough of all this whining from the lower order:

At the Atlantic Magazine's "Aspen Ideas Festival," the idle rich go to a ski resort town and pay the Atlantic Media Co. a great deal of money to listen to rich people with intellectual credentials of some kind talk at each other for a while. It may surprise you to learn that these wealthy elites think the biggest problem facing America today is that the wealthy elite have to pay taxes, while the poor and unemployed sit around collecting "Social Security" and "food stamps" and "unemployment benefits." ...

5. THIS is exactly the sort of thing I expected. Because MSNBC isn't
promoting their presense there, I suspected it was some sort of deal like that.

So far I've seen Andrea Greenspan and Chuckie Todd there. Anyone else?

3. Maybe Scooter is there with Judith waiting for the aspens to turn!
I have NO doubt MSNBC would not want to miss that unless, of course, Lohan changes her nail polish to showcase a new 'thought'.

19. The Scooter Libby quote from a letter to Judy Miller
Your reporting, and you, are missed. Like many Americans, I admire your principled stand. But, like many of your friends and readers, I would welcome you back among the rest of us, doing what you do best – reporting......

You went into jail in the summer. It is fall now. You will have stories to cover – Iraqi elections and suicide bombers, biological threats and the Iranian nuclear program. Out West, where you vacation, the aspens will already be turning. They turn in clusters, because their roots connect them. Come back to work – and life. Until then, you will remain in my thoughts and prayers.

It makes it convenient to spread their BS that Obama is anti-business. This is how the media works to make sure that Democrats don't actually govern as Democrats.

16. As Posters #s 2&10 said, the celebs are going gaga over Nial FERGUSON, ZUKERMAN
A few days ago my local ex-radio talkshow wingnut GLEEFULLY sent me the first link, below, that says OBAMA's natural constituency/intelligencia were turning against him.

I replied: "Lloyd GROVE is a gossip columnist. ZUCKERMAN is an albatross, formerly a FOB (Friend of Bill's). As for Babs and Mr STREISAND, I love her as a musical treasure and value all exceptional people who publically identify themselves as being on the political Left and love it when such artists fling zingers at wingnuts, but as for gossip GROVE to cite the STREISANDs as political authorities, uh, no."

Later I found the CONASON article on Nazi FERGUSON.

The Elite Turn Against Obama

by Lloyd Grove

Even the Aspen Ideas Festival, an annual gathering of the country's brightest lights, isn't Obama country anymore. Lloyd Grove on the president's waning support among the intelligentsia. ....

“If you’re asking if the United States is about to become a socialist state, I’d say it’s actually about to become a European state, with the expansiveness of the welfare system and the progressive tax system like what we’ve already experienced in Western Europe,” Harvard business and history professor Niall Ferguson declared during Monday’s kickoff session, offering a withering critique of Obama’s economic policies, which he claimed were encouraging laziness. ....

Ferguson was joined in his harsh attack by billionaire real estate mogul and New York Daily News owner Mort Zuckerman. Both lambasted Obama’s trillion-dollar deficit spending program—in the name of economic stimulus to cushion the impact of the 2008 financial meltdown—as fiscally ruinous, potentially turning America into a second-rate power.

This was greeted by hearty applause from a crowd that included Barbra Streisand and her husband James Brolin. “Depressing, but fantastic,” Streisand told me afterward, rendering her verdict on the session. “So exciting. Wonderful!”

Brolin’s assessment: “Mind-blowing.”

Sure, listen to Niall Ferguson -- but always ignore his bad advice

The celebrity historian sternly advises us to adopt a GOP budget, which will leave us deeper in debt

By Joe Conason

Before the inquiring minds at the Aspen Ideas Festival go totally gaga over Niall Ferguson, perhaps they ought to know a little more about the British historian's keen desire to punish our pampered working families, and how he would prefer to see us spend our dollars.

As a celebrity intellectual, Ferguson much prefers the broad, bold stroke to the careful detail, so it is scarcely surprising that he endorsed Wisconsin Republican Paul Ryan's "wonderful" budget template, confident that his audience in Aspen would know almost nothing about that document. For Ferguson, the most beguiling quality of Ryan's budget must be its bias against the working and middle classes and in favor of the wealthy. But as the Center for Budget and Policy Priorities revealed in a scorching review, the plan doesn't work even on its own terms. ....

18. Does anyone doubt what these Global Aristocrats have in store for us?
It's called Medieval Europe.

They don't even bother to hide it anymore. The Titanic is going down and they want to make sure we're locked in Steerage with a gun pointed at us.
