HOT DIGGITY, We May Have Ourselves A Real BARNBURNER In Louisiana
Hee Hah! Finally some action in Louisiana. Smells like a cook-out with the menu serving Vitter as the roasting swine. :woohoo:

" Just before the end of qualifying for the U.S. Senate race late this afternoon in Louisiana, a well-known former state Supreme Court justice jumped in to the Republican primary against incumbent David Vitter.

It's been a long time since I covered Louisiana politics, but if memory serves Chet Traylor was first elected to the court in the 1990s with major, major backing from the state's biggest business group in an effort to steer the court to the right. It was a hugely expensive race by the standards of the day. We'll be reporting more on this development, but what it suggests to me is that the business community is abandoning Vitter. And unless things have changed a lot in the dozen years since I moved away, Traylor is going to have access to boatloads of campaign cash for this primary.

The other problem this potentially poses for Vitter is geographic and cultural. Traylor is a good ol' boy from rural northeast Louisiana. Vitter is a Harvard-educated former Rhodes Scholar from the New Orleans area. That didn't pose a problem for Vitter when he first won election in 2004, in what was then an open nonpartisan primary. But the law was since changed and it's a closed Republican primary now, so he'll be facing Traylor straight up. Throw in Vitter's dalliances with prostitutes, and Traylor is in a strong position to exploit the old rural-urban (or New Orleans v. not
New Orleans) fault lines.

Democrats in Louisiana are smiling tonight.

4. Did you hear it?
I don't remember his exact words but Keith made a diaper comment tonight after mentioning David Vitter. I wanted to cheer but I was too busy choking on my Diet Coke. Way to go after one of these right wings hypocrites. Thank You Keith!!

9. Traylor is anti-gay Repiglican
What the heck is wrong at D.U.?

We should be supporting Charlie Melancon, a real Democrat, in this race.

10. Amen! I was wondering about that
Why is the Republican primary in LA such a big deal on DU? Is it because it BENEFITS Melancon or does it just make it easier for a Republican to win? I confess I don't know enough about LA politics to know.

14. Traylor is obviously a Teabagger
He can probably oust Vitter in the primary. This is good.

But he may also be able to defeat Melancon in the general. Not good.

(Don't mean to be trite.)

But Charlie IS a DEMOCRAT!

I do not understand why people would not realise charlie melancon is 'real people' on their side.

18. The people of Lousiana are
simply not well-informed, and on the special occasion that you find ones that are, they are mostly ill-informed by Faux et.al.

I say this as a relative of several dozen Louisianians and a frequent visitor to Lake Charles and Alexandria and Monroe and Lafayette, less so to Shreveport and New Orleans. Just so you know I'm not hatin'.

Charlie has a better chance against Vitter than Traylor IMHO. Vitter's warts are well-known, Traylor can run as an "outsider" with the strongest of insider connections That's a dangerous combination in the current national political environment. (It's what my governor, Rick Perry, is doing.)

15. Presumably, a Republican primmary would deplete Vitter's campaign cash
If Vitter is the nominee, a serious challenge will leave him with that much less money to use against Melancon.

Furthermore, whichever Republican wins the nomination may find that there's lingering resentment among the supporters of the other. The loser's supporters may therefore be less likely to vote in the general.

I'm no expert on Louisiana politics, either. I'd say, just on general principles, that, yes, this development should benefit Melancon.
