Gay veteran: Mr. President, there is nothing scientific about this latest "survey" re: DADT
We've seen how these "surveys" operate before

by Timothy Beauchamp

This isn't the first time a "survey" has been done to derail integrating the military. You'd think we were in a time warp back to 1993 when Sam Nunn took reporters on a field trip to show how promiscuous gay sailors were going to turn the silent service fleet into "sodomy subs." Of course, I just so happened to be one of those gay sailors who served in silence on submarines, during the Cold War, and was outraged by Sam Nunn's homophobic betrayal. From Wayne Besen:

Nunn called for a public "field hearing" to ostensibly find out what men and women in uniform thought of lifting the ban. In an orchestrated publicity stunt, Nunn escorted the national media into the attack submarine, the Montpelier, and the submarine tender Emory S. Land. A May 11, 1993 New York Times article vividly described the scene:

Under the glare of television cameras in cramped sleeping quarters, mess halls and even shower rooms aboard several ships and submarines toured by the senators here at America's largest Navy base....on the Land, 90 women share four showers and four toilets. On the Montpelier, most of the all-male crew sleeps in triple bunks separated by a corridor two feet wide. There are 117 bunks for 147 men, so crewmembers take turns sharing the same beds.

In a flash, Nunn lowered the tenor of the debate and created visions of promiscuous, unpatriotic gays and lesbians transforming our Navy into a hapless fleet of Sodomy Subs. All people wanted to talk about after this monstrosity was bunk beds.

This is 2010, and not 1993, Mr. President. The American people are ready to treat patriotic LGBT servicemen with the same Uniform Code of Military Justice standards of conduct that are expected of heterosexual troops. There is no excuse for the commander-in-chief, or any other conservative military officer, to destroy unit cohesion by scapegoating our American LGBT servicemen and women who are currently serving honorably in silence. This kind of hateful political stunt might have worked in 1993, but the LGBT community can not stand for this, again, in 2010. There was nothing scientific about Sam Nunn's "survey," and there is nothing scientific about this latest joke of a "survey." They were transparently created to accomplish one thing and that is to torpedo efforts to allow LGBT servicemen and servicewomen to serve their country openly and honestly, and enjoy the same rights and privileges that should go along with their service to our country.

1. Golly, who couldn't see this coming?
As soon as they announced the "survey" bullshit, I knew they'd stoop to push-polling. And quite a few people here were poo-pooing it with "they're just working on finding out HOW to do it, not whether they SHOULD do it." Right. This will be gathered and used to show why gays cannot be allowed to serve openly in the military. I'd like to hear from those who still think otherwise.

3. This is a disgusting survey

I think as the content is made available, it will either be scrapped or ignored. Ignored as in not used for anything except toilet paper. I expect a good number of troops will object too, which will surprise the brass most of all.

Despite this survey, I still think there are many people in the upper ranks who are trying to end DADT and that it will get done within the next year.

4. Isn't it nice that they're asking the grunts about their feelings and stuff?
I have a question for the next survey:

If you're ordered to torture some hapless schmuck whose only crime was to be taken into custody by the military, would you:

A. Say nothing
B. Refuse an illegal order
C. Report the person who gave the order to higher ups
D. Demand that the order be given in writing with a notarized signature, suitable for producing as evidence at a war crimes tribunal

13. Pentagon DADT survey is a putrid stain on the morality of America. History will not forgive.

In very little time people will look back at this survey and think we lived in the dark ages of bigotry - do you really want that to be your legacy Mr. President?

19. Link to entire survey:
http://www.servicemembersunited.org/survey

Here's one:

If Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell is repealed and you are working with a Service member in your immediate unit who has said he or
she is gay or lesbian, how, if at all, would it affect the extent to which. . .

Very positively
Positively
Equally as positively as negatively
Negatively
Very negatively
No effect

a. Service members in your immediate unit can get help from their leaders on personal problems?

b. Leaders in your immediate unit trust their unit members?

c. Leaders in your immediate unit have the skills and abilities to lead unit members into combat?

d. Leaders in your immediate unit care about their Service members?

Wow. How would any group fare in this harsh spotlight? Even with NO axe to grind?

21. Since when does the chain of command care about an individual troop's opinion on ANYTHING?
Question for all ex and current service members: Have you ever been asked for your opinion on anything in any meaningful manner?

Yeah, I thought as much.

What a crock. This is just a data-mining exercise to use to delay the repeal of DADT. The "bonus" will be investigations for all of those who are outed on this survey by homophobic troops with an axe to grind.
