Why would we spy on Quakers?
Could it be because they can attain conscientious objector status and our government wants to monitor if they are allowing people to join just to attain that? If this is the case...could this be a warning sign that a draft is coming?

...much harder to figure out what them darn Quakers are thinking - no electronics to support eavesdropping.

28. You might be confusing the Quakers with the Amish
Quakers are as into modern technology as anyone. I used to attend our local Quaker meeting for many years. There might be a few who avoid modern-day stuff for philosophical reasons, but none do it for religious reasons per se.

But you brought to mind an interesting point: the Amish are one of the traditional "peace churches" as well. If being pacifists is what brought the Quakers under government surveillance, does that mean they're monitoring the Amish as well??

10. Because Quakers want to wage peace, and that is definetely dangerous.
Edited on Tue Jan-30-07 10:45 PM by me b zola
Also, if people were to be exposed to Quaker's beliefs, they may actually be convinced that Jesus was some kind of peace loving radical that challanged those who used religion for political gain.

Ya can't get any more dangerous than them Quakers, don't ya see?

18. That's got to be it.
Peace = terrorism.

Or something. I have to admit I kind of lost the Bush administration's "logic" after "War Is Peace, Freedom Is Slavery, Ignorance Is Strength..." (Or was that 1984? Eh, Bush's policies, Orwellian dystopia...it's pretty much all the same now, isn't it?)

Think as I do what out exception
The only thing that makes sense to this humble scribe is that like many other groups the Quakers have not been willing to swallow the hogwash this present White House administration has spouted. " If you are not with us you are against us". So the Quakers who have a belief in nonviolence would be firmly against the policies and politics of war. Those evil, evil Quakers.

13. WE as in most Americans wouldn't, however those in the Bush Administration would.
Edited on Tue Jan-30-07 10:55 PM by shance
Because it is a known fact that the Quaker religion/philosophy is about doing good and being an active participant in ones own community.

The Bush Administration finds that to be a "threat" to their security appparently.

15. because they have one of the nations oldest, most effective
anti-war organizations? The American Friends Service Com. is a wonderful, helpful, and people oriented group.
I've been very moved by my encounters with their members, and the gentle but FIRM- committed attitude that they display.

I was searching for some help for a friend from Africa who was becoming a US citizen,(willingness to join military was a pre-requisite) and they connected him with someone who knew what was going on-

I've also had the pleasure of keeping vigil with a wonderful 89yr old Quaker man, who has stood outside the capitol at lunch hour every weekday, for over 5 years winter, spring, summer, and fall.- He is a wonderful inspiration.

Quakers walk their talk- I admire them.

peace,
blu

peace loving liberal Catholic organization, Pax Christi too. :wow:

Pax Christi USA promotes Christian nonviolence on the personal, communal, national and international levels. Believing in the gospel call to conversion as found in the Beatitudes, Pax Christi USA denounces and resists the evils of violence while striving to reflect the Peace of Christ.

You know us practicing liberal Christian people who wish to spread love, peace, forgiveness, kindness, understanding and cooperation are dangerous to the power elite itching for perpetual war. :eyes:
