And this one is more respectable, IMO, and less trial and error.

Sure hope it works.

And please disregard my suggestion in the last thread that it might be time for a new thread.

You were already on it!

6. Checking in, it looks like one bolt has been removed.
How many are there total, and do you know if they we be taking them off in any particular order?

I would think they would need to remove the bolts so as not to leave one side 'pinched'.

9. Discovery of second pipe in Deepwater Horizon riser stirs debate among experts

Two pipes are seen in this view of the riser just above the Macondo well's blowout preventer, captured on BP video in June, just after it was cut.
For the first time Friday, the Coast Guard and BP acknowledged that a mysterious second pipe, wedged next to the drill pipe in what remains of the Deepwater Horizon's riser, is fouling up the works where the well is spewing hundreds of millions of gallons of crude oil into the Gulf of Mexico.

"We used a diamond saw and we got inside. We found there was actually two sets of drill pipe there," said retired Adm. Thad Allen, the top U.S. Coast Guard official overseeing the response to America's worst-ever oil spill.

Share Some experts say a second piece of drill pipe in the riser could have prevented shear rams on the rig's blowout preventer from sealing the well and permanently cutting off the flow of oil after the April 20 explosion. The presence of two pipes could have also contributed to BP's failure to make a clean cut on the riser when securing the existing containment dome, inhibiting its ability to collect the maximum amount of oil.

It "presumably fell down beside it as a result of the explosion and the riser pipe being bent over," Allen said. He noted that the second pipe does not have oil shooting from it.

Don't know if this was posted elsewhere on DU but posting it here anyways.

Remember when we were discussing the reasons why the wire saw didn't work? This is why.

10. Interesting! Am I understanding this correctly, that it's possible a second
piece of pipe may have been the reason the BOP failed to begin with?

And it does make sense this could be what caused the problems for the wire saw.

Thanks!

13. 'reason the BOP failed to begin with' ... Yes, you're understanding
it correctly. I don't know enough about the inside workings of the BOP to know if this extra pipe was the reason the rams didn't work. Remember, the BOP was having it's own problems without this extra pipe. However, this extra pipe could be an indication that it was blown up into its current configuration frown down-hole, which would serve to illustrate a little bit more what happened in that hole as the blowout occured.

Edited on Sat Jul-10-10 10:03 PM by Subdivisions
This is most likely some sort of prep work. I'm of the idea that they're going to take that riser flange off. I don't know why they'd have to clean that.

19. From TOD: (Anybody catch any of this action?)
From Reno Dave @ 8:57pm
The view from Ocean Intervention ROV 1 shows one of the bolts being slowly removed.

Very clever design for the wrench. It appears to be a sort-of hydraulic ratchet wrench, with a cycle-time for each "click" of the ratchet at about 1 minute.

At that rate, it would take quite a while to completely remove each bolt. I wonder if this tool is only meant to break the bolts loose, an another tool will be used to more quickly remove them.

9:14pm
Ahh, they use one of the ROV's manipulators to simply grab the top of the loosened bolt and spin it.

--------------------------------------------------------------

And an assortment:

I particularly liked the part where they used the wrist of the ROV arm as a hammer to help set the wrench in place.

--

That was a laugh-or-cry moment. It actually looked like the temper tantrum I might hav--er, some people might have, with a lug wrench on a flat tire. I'm glad you mentioned it because I was afraid I was hallucinating.

Edited on Sun Jul-11-10 03:05 AM by csziggy
It's not completely hooked up, but it slide into place pretty easily.

Edited to add: apparently they were just testing the fit. I guess now they have to hook it up to the pipes and hoses. Or maybe they were not happy with it (I hope not) or they forgot the seal or ???????????

It's going to take a while to get that spool sucked all the way down.

They need a couple of big C-clamps and some "finesse".

Boa Deep C ROV1 is loooking closely at one of the alignment pins. Maybe that one is stuck.

I say hit it with a hammer. If that doesn't work, get a bigger hammer.

That cap they are going to attach looks awfully big to me. And as I understand it, the well integrity has to hold up for that cap to work. So, until and unless it actually works, I would not be talking about progress just yet.

Ultimately the well will be killed by pumping concrete in through a relief well. The process of putting an improved cap on it, if successful, will substantially reduce the amount of oil and gas that is fouling the environment.

76. I was not expecting the progress they have made to be as quick as it has been....
it is good news they are moving quite quickly, is it not?

55. Those people who work the ROVs and the cranes.....
they are amazing. I hope they get a big fat raise for this because it all depends on them way down there.

77. I am very much in awe of them...
Without them this catastrophe would be even worse.

53. That looks like a spool. They still have to put a cap on top of it.

56. You're right. The oil is coming out the top of the spool.
They have to bolt the spool down, then move the 3 stacking cap over it.

57. Yes, it's the spool needed for the cap.

It's a B F D getting it on there and not wrecking the pipes coming out the top of the old riser.

"Drill to match, stomp to fit!"

ETA looks like they lifted the spool and let it drop back down.

IT'S ON!!!

65. I watched that this morning.
The Kent Wells videos have been invaluable in understanding what is going on....that and the people at TOD. Sounds like the relief well #1 is in good time too.

74. Whoa - that was amazing. They've accomplished a lot in a relatively
short period of time! Design, manufacture, testing -- hats off to them!

They haven't even put the cap on yet, and the oil is coming out completely unrestricted.

72. The way these guys are talking, it sounded as if it was over - and a Success
Since BeePee is not showing the gusher today - FIGURES they wouldn't!! - and what they are showing looks much more benign than I am used to seeing, I thought maybe they had capped it.

Doncha know? ;-)

if it was so slick and easy?

Do you have any idea how much planning and mechanical work went into that operation?

Have you ever actually made anything, using machine tools?

80. Uh, you would be surprised how many things I have "made" using tools of many types...
under great pressure, having been a self employed designer for 20 years...

I have questions as to the priorites of BP, and their decisions over the past 2+ months. Enough said for tonight. Too tired to go there.
