Michigan mom, Aimee L. Sword, sent to prison after having sex with teen son she gave up for adoption
WTF?

A Michigan mom who pleaded guilty to having sex with her 14-year-old biological son she gave up for adoption and later found on the Internet, will face at least nine years behind bars, according to the Detroit Free Press.

Aimee L. Sword, 36, of Waterford, apologized at her sentencing on Monday in Oakland County Circuit Court on Monday. The former Macy's makeup clerk could face up to 30 years in jail.

Cases of incest occur. It's a very bad thing. I'm not sure each case is a national news story, though.

Even in Biblical times, Lot got seduced by both of his daughters after they got him drunk, or so the fable goes. Incest is a bad thing, but it's not national news.

6. I saw a special on the BBC --
Edited on Tue Jul-13-10 10:24 AM by Hell Hath No Fury
in which a phenomenon called "genetic attraction" (IIRC) was discussed. It took place between related individuals who had grown up apart from each other and met later, be it brother/sister/ mother/son, father/daughter. It seems upon first meeting, there can be be an overpowering physical attraction between the individuals. The programs showed several instances of this attraction, including several between siblings who were having sex with each other within hours of meeting, and an adult mother/son who entered into a relationship after meeting for the first time since she had given him up for adoption.

Biology is a wierd, wild thing.

n edit: Found it --

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genetic_sexual_attraction

Genetic sexual attraction (GSA) is sexual attraction between close relatives, such as siblings, first and second cousins or a parent and offspring, who first meet as adults.

GSA may occur as a consequence of adoption, when the adopted children knowingly or unknowingly encounter biological relatives. Although this is a rare consequence of adoptive reunions, the large number of adoptive reunions in recent years means that a larger number of people (about half) are affected. If a sexual relationship is entered, it is known as incest, and may be distressing to both parties (see incest taboo). This phenomenon - siblings separated at birth and meeting only as adults and falling in incestuous love - is known in the folk epic, the Finnish national epic Kalevala and the tragic hero Kullervo.

GSA is rare between people raised together in early childhood, as most siblings, due to the Westermarck effect, which evolved to prevent incest

8. Some sort of primitive
"literal" need to re-connect?

Weird.

But a lot of people have to act it out, especially if they share compulsiveness and lack of impulse control.

9. Wow that is really interesting! And frightening! But in a way it kind of makes sense.
I mean, who does one feel most deeply about? Family members! And if a person has not had the chance to build up the sexual taboo....

It's very creepy and disturbing, but makes horrific sense.

Gosh, it gives old Oedipus Rex his explanation (since he was raised away from his biological family).

There once was a man named Oedipus Rex
You may have heard about his odd complex
His name appears in Freud's index
Because he
Loved his mother

His rivals used to say quite a bit
That as a monarch he was most unfit
But still in all they had to admit
That he
Loved his mother...

15. That is interesting.
As previous posters said, and my first thought ..was that these people have an overwhelming need to reconnect..to be close..to make up for the lost time...they are lost....and find comfort, support, "love"...whatever..in each others 'arms. This is a tragedy in so many, many ways.

Sad, very sad....

16. That's rather unusual.
I saw a show recently which discussed pheromones and the role they play in evolution. They suggested that close relatives should smell off-putting to each other in order to increase the chances that offspring will have increased immunity. If close relatives breed, their offspring won't have a robust immunity because much of the offspring's parent's immunity will have overlap. Perhaps there's some genetic reason for why this occurs, but I'm clueless as to what that would be.

17. Very interesting!
Years ago when I was working for a startup in the SF Bay Area, one morning they called us all in to a meeting to announce that one of our coworkers had died and that we should not necessarily believe all we were going to read in the papers.

What was in the papers: he and his sister were found dead in the house they both lived in. Both had been shot, and the house had been torched. It was an apparent murder-suicide - apparently he torched the house right before shooting himself.

One of them had been adopted; he had somehow found her, and she later moved to the state to live with him. He had brought her to company functions, etc. But then she got a boyfriend. Apparently that put him over the edge. I always thought it was creepy and sad. But at least what you posted here provides some additional explanation for why people can be so weird.

22. Wow! We're actually programmed for incest under certain...
circumstances? Whoda thunk it, but human psychology never ceases to amaze. (And arouse, I suppose)

Nine years in the slam for this, though. Yeah, what she did was wrong, but 9 years? What's this going to do to her family? Is it worth the "justice" to have her 5 kids tormented in school over this? Have her husband be a single dad? Miss some of the most important parts of her kids growing up?

Sad story.

23. Genetic Attraction can be amazingly powerful.
I have a friend who met his female cousin (same age) for the first time as an adult. He says that the physical attraction was stronger than anything he had ever felt with any other girl. It was instant and overpowering, he claims. They married quickly (legal in their state) and have been happily together over forty years now. Their (now adults themselves) kids appear normal.

18. Yes I did!
How did she manage to coerce this kid into it? Or maybe he was into it as well and only later realized how truly bizarre and unsettling the whole thing was?

I don't know, but it's a weird scene regardless.
