Pakistan Judge vs. Attorney-gate

In Pakistan, a military regime-ruled country that has served as the main training ground for Al Qaeda since its inception, a fired judge has created a scandal that is about to topple the nation. The Pakistani crisis stems from the military regime's role in the unprecedented removal and arrest of the Chief Justice of Pakistan's Supreme Court - Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhrythe.

Well, sounds like blocking the corporate take-over of the nation's resources coupled with support for human rights might make the CJ a bit of a thorn in General Musharraf's police state. What has the country's reaction been to this turn of events? Well, for starters, lawyers from all over the nation went wild in street protests (also from BBC):

Now, let's compare this situation with that of the attorney-gate scandal, in which the White House (a euphemism for Karl Rove in all matters domestic and to Dick Cheney in all matters foreign) used the power of the Department of Justice for political and even criminal (allegedly) purposes.

This scandal is far more complex than the one described above and involves many more players and issues. But, to save time and frustration, let's just examine the most pressing and least focused on question involving the firing of a U.S Attorney - Did the President of the United States fire a federal prosecutor who was investigating him - the President of the United States - on charges of corruption and bribery?

"WASHINGTON -- A US grand jury in Guam opened an investigation of controversial lobbyist Jack Abramoff more than two years ago, but President Bush removed the supervising federal prosecutor, and the probe ended soon after.

So in Pakistan where the CJ of the Supreme Court was removed because he was anti-corruption and pro-human rights, the country reacted. In the US, however, where a US territory - Guam - has become a hothouse for the sex-slave trade and for money laundering, the public does nothing when the chief investigator on the case is removed by the President of the United States. Remember too, that Jack Abramoff is not just a lobbyist. He is a major player in the Karl Rove and George W. Bush circle of friends and he has been implicated in everything from fraud to murder. And this is but one tiny pin-prick of a scandal so serious that it alone should be grounds for impeachment.

But we don't hear to much about it.
Wheels of justice grinding ever so slowly for *.
