Vermont Impeachment Message Going to Congress

Liza Earle and James Leas co-orchestrated an impeachment hearing with Vermont's lone Congressional Representative Peter Welch today. He encouraged voters to shout and shout louder if we want impeachment to move forward. One woman was so impassioned she knelt before Welch on bended knee and begged him to lead the impeachment movement. When she stood up he hugged her.

The original hour and a half meeting stretched into three hours. Over 250 people attended. Welch will take Vermont's message to the floor of Congress next week.

It was clear that impeachment will go nowhere without a much stronger and more organized voter drive. Welch rattled off the numbers needed to either impeach or override a veto, and made the point that he was elected to represent all Vermonters, not just the activist pro-impeachment element. At present the vote to either end Iraq or impeach the administration just wasn't there.

A letter was read from a woman in Essex, Vermont whose son, an army captain, was killed during the staging of a photo op for the president. She said her "betrayal is pointed and more personal", and told Welch, "your courage is needed".

I came away from the event not quite discouraged by the day, but not encouraged on the impeachment topic either. To summarize the Welch statements today, unless we mount an national movement to impeach, impeachment is a non-starter.
