Can Someone 'splain to me why it is that even the shabbiest porno website
run out of some guys garage in Panorama City, has known for years how to stream a video, in any format you like, but the combined technological genius and multi-million dollar budgets of Google, The Disney Company, NBC, CBS, Clearchannel, and especially YouTube, just can't make it work?

I think we should be able to bill these companies every time we see 7/8 of a video and it just stops downloading, I think $10 is fair. If we could get that law passed, I'd bet we wouldn't have any more problems seeing their product.

4. If it ain't broke, don't fix it
Edited on Sun May-13-07 05:20 AM by Eagle_Eye
The porn website is using an unregistered copy of a shareware program written by an undergraduate college student (probably a Democrat) that the website got running years ago and never upgraded.

The big commercial video sites always use the latest registered version of software that is constantly upgraded, registered, licensed, and paid for. The commercial video websites also follow the Patriot Act and record the IP address, time of day, and videos watched for reporting to the bush's homeland security people.

The porn website couldn't care less about reporting to homeland security.

13. not true
Most porn sites display video through WC3 standardized code that will open the player software residing on the user's machine.

7. At least.
With 500,000 porn sites to choose from, but only ONE YouTube - well, the problem should be obvious.

8. That's funny, because the busiest non-portal (google, msn, etc.), non-shopping
(e-bay, amazon, etc.) site is pornacess.com. youTube and the network media sites don't even show up in the top 100, internationally or domestically.

11. Got a source?
I'm not saying it isn't as you say, but it would certainly seem weird to me.

I know Alexa for example is not an accurate of measuring website traffic, but YouTube has been firmly in the first places for several months now... it would be very strange for it not to be in the top 10 for example.

12. Should have included the link. When I get to the computer I used tonight,
I'll dig it out of the history. It is just a global traffic monitor site and lists the top 100 sites in total and by country. It is definitely not Alexa, though.

All kinds of vaguely interesting stats on major site clusters.

22. It's basically like Alexa, just with a smaller sample...
You have to download a toolbar in order for your stats to count in... just like Alexa.

I don't think it is very accurate. For example, I'm Costa Rican, and I can guarantee you that the most visited sites in the country are NOT gambling sites.

23. Well now you've gone and done it, I can't find any source of raw site stats.
every one that I've found is a subscription service, or sample, based on some form of software that has to be actively participated in. The skewing is obvious because the results vary so widely from source to source.

I find it hard to believe that somebody hasn't polled a large sample of major nodes to see where people are going.

10. Just bitching about how YouTube (in this case) will frequently load over half of
a video and then just decide to stop and you have to reload the whole thing to see the last bit.

14. Hard to say
YouTube delivers video via Flash. Flash does not stream. Flash pre-loads and then plays. Perhaps the problem has more to do with the particular videos your are viewing. Maybe they were not compressed properly when the YouTuber uploaded them to the YouTube server.

16. An undeniable fact, but once the capability exists,
Edited on Mon May-14-07 02:35 PM by greyhound1966
why do these corporations have such a hard time implementing it?

This is symptomatic of why I got the hell out of the IT business, cheap is always better than good even when cheap now just means paying way more down the road, Just drives me nutz!

ETA: as long as I'm bitching, I hate KPOJ, my local AA affiliate and home of Thom Hartman, they use the shit streaming app from clearchannel and I have to listen to the local show 20 seconds at a time, ARGHH! They won't even respond to e-mails. Once his national show starts at 9, I switch to the Phoenix station which doesn't seem to have any problem at all maintaining a connection through winamp.

After all, I love watching Bill Maher's "New Rules" each week on there for free.

As for the 7/8, yeah it sucks, but if you want to see everything, buy the entire movie
