Angry vendors attack Reliance stores in India

Thousands of irate street vendors attacked stores set up by Indian giant Reliance Industries in eastern India, saying the new nationwide chain threatens their livelihoods.

Some 5,000 vegetable sellers vandalised three Reliance Fresh stores in Ranchi in the first violence against the firm's plans to build a local version of US retail giant Wal-Mart, police said.

"If Reliance sells vegetables, then what do we do?" screamed fruit-seller Lalmunia Devi as protesters hurled rocks at the store's gleaming facade, smashing windows.

......

The city's 1.5 million residents shop mainly at weekly bazaars where farm produce is supplied by local villages, the protesters say.

"Millions of people earn their livelihoods by selling vegetables and other domestic products on the streets and if Reliance does the same, then we will starve," protester Devi said.

1. and here's an irony...
the liberal instinct is to protect the lielihood of the small farmer in this instance. However, it is the influence of hard line Hindu religious parties under which the farmers fall. Their fears are exploited.

4. cheap products still need people to buy them
When a economic eco-system is disproportionately impacted by a corporate behemoth, the weakest suffer the greatest harm.

3. we stopped by the Reliance places a bunch of times
when we went to India early this year. mostly the gas stations for gas. when we stayed in Jaipur there was a Reliance Fresh near there that we went to also. didn't get much but it seemed clean so we went there.

also the Reliance gas stations usually had the rest rooms with toilets like those here and in most other Western parts of the world so if i had to use the restroom i would wait until that one. i refuse to use those ones on the ground. i can't even stand to look at those.

India has a lot of problems and lots of corruption which make it even harder to deal with these things. i always read about it but to actually be there i could see it and experience it myself.

6. Tell them to study IT, graphic design, or economics... Sounds simple enough.

Sorry, their government should know what to do with the influx of jobs and everything. India has far more opportunities now than even 5 years ago. They have no right to complain. They have opportunities and one hell of an economy to give them a step up.

Americans are asking the same questions. And the answer isn't so simple. We're not seeing any new fields coming into replace the old ones going to them yet.

8. We have one hell of an economy too
comparatively, to large parts of the world. It doesn't guarantee jobs for everyone here, and it doesn't there either. Your comments are really just as selfish as the money grubbers who are exploiting these economies in the first place. They only care about the shareholder, you only care about you and your preceived right to an American lifestyle. Both attitudes are what has caused these billions of people to have been abandoned to poverty for all these years. You can't say you care about all these people resorting to terrorism because of the exploitation of their resources - and then turn around and dump on them because they "took your job".
