Cash-strapped California public university paid $75,000 for Palin speech

By The Associated Press
Saturday, July 17th, 2010 -- 1:35 pm

Capping a long-running dispute, a cash-strapped California public university revealed Friday its foundation arm paid Sarah Palin $75,000 to give a 40-minute speech at a recent anniversary dinner for the campus.

The former vice presidential candidate's appearance drew intense criticism and scrutiny after officials refused to disclose the terms of her contract to speak at the black-tie gala that ultimately netted major donations for California State University, Stanislaus.

University spokeswoman Eve Hightower did not fully explain what prompted the sudden release of the former Alaska governor's speaking fee, which officials previously had maintained was confidential.

In a statement, campus administrators proclaimed the event to be the most successful fundraiser in the school's history, saying it raised more than $207,000 for scholarships — an unexplained increase from the previously released figure of $60,000.
Story continues below...

"During these difficult economic times, I am especially proud that we have received an unprecedented level of private support," campus President Ham Shirvani said. "Thanks to the foundation's generosity and fundraising, our 50th Anniversary Fundraising Gala was a huge success."

1. And if palin was the true American that she claims she is
she would have done the speech for free, just having her expenses paid.

I guess she does not really believe in education as much as she claims.
Pay me first if you want my help seems to be her battle cry.

Where is your true christian spirit sarah, is it really tied to money??

2. She is all about self interest
I don't understand how seemingly intelligent people fall for her bullshit.

I'm sure they don't charge speaking fees to public institutions.

10. What does it matter?
if you consider her to be selfish for taking a speaking fee (which is now essentially the only job she has), why would anyone else taking their regular fee from a similar institution get a pass? Personally, I don't have an issue with her, or any private citizen, taking the money. I have an issue with the school for offering it if they can't afford it.

On the other hand, I know there's the temptation to blame Palin for this mess, but this is 100% the school's problem. If the school is this cash-strapped and still decides that it's worth it to bring in Palin at a significant cost to speak, then the issue here is not with the speaker they chose to invite.

There's a lot of reasons to dislike Palin, but this isn't one of them (unless you want to take issue with everyone who charges speaking fees above and beyond expenses).
