Drunk Russians Drown Escaping Heatwave

More than 1,200 people drowned across Russia in June this year, he said, including 233 between July 5 and July 12.

"The majority of those drowned were drunk," he said. "The children died because adults simply did not look after them."

Last week six children drowned in the Sea of Azov in southern Russia because the summer camp employees who were minding them were drunk.

"Russia's Emergencies Ministry is very worried by the current situation. In the last day alone, 49 people drowned (in Russia), including two children, Vadim Seryogin, a department head at the ministry, told a news conference.

3. There's a (possibly-apocryphal) story...
Kievan Rus was presented with the options of converting to Christianity, Islam or Judaism in the 980s; his main reason for rejecting Islam was the prohibition on alcohol.

(And wouldn't those second and third options have changed things!)

4. Canada has about 400 drownings per year
Given weather conditions (which are similar to Russia's), probably 100 or so of those would be in June. Russia has about 5 times the population, so that would scale to about 500 drownings in June, were Canada's population the same size as Russia's. Lot's of Canada's drownings are also booze related.

The U.S. has about 3500 drownings per year. That seems like a pretty low number compared to Canada and Russia, given the much longer swimming season in the U.S. Warmer water might be part of the explanation - cold water can really fool people, even good swimmers.

5. Thanks for the info
this appears to be a spike in drownings in Russia.
