NEW YORK (AFP) – New York's state governor on Friday banned a controversial database created by the New York Police Department on people stopped and checked by street patrols.

Governor David Paterson signed a law which prohibits the storing of information gathered during "stop and frisk" operations in a database.

According to Paterson, the database, filled with details of mostly innocent people, posed a threat to civil rights.

"Today we have an opportunity to set the scales of safety and liberty in balance before we lose something we can't get back," Paterson said.

The law is a major defeat for New York City's powerful mayor, Michael Bloomberg, and his close ally, NYPD Commissioner Raymond Kelly.

NYPD officers stop huge numbers of people during street patrols around the city, most of them black or Hispanic. Names, addresses and other basic information are put into a computerized database regardless of whether the people have done anything illegal or not. ............(more)
