government admits a seep is happening some distance from the well
http://www.cnn.com/2010/US/07/18/gulf.oil.disaster/index.html?video=true?video=true&hpt=T1

The federal government's oil spill response director says testing has revealed that there is a "detected seep a distance from the well" and has ordered BP to quickly notify the government if other leaks are found.

1. BP spokeman says "he had no information about the leak"... weird.
So who exactly "detected the leak"? Is there non-BP monitoring equipment down there?

8. Possibly.. its also weird Allen's letter was very vague..
with no details. Seems he is probing and does not have definitive information. I hope its nothing. This would not be a good development.

18. I thought his was something like seven miles away.
If so, I doubt it's the same thing. But we can always wait for more information.

20. I think its two miles away, if its the same seep that was observerd before..
Its probably a natural seep. There are thousands of them in the Gulf.

2. 'has ordered BP to quickly notify the government if other leaks are found'
BP has run the government around on a leash since this started, I don't think they will care much for the newest "order".

7. Adm. Allen sent BP a letter "I must remain abreast of the status"
more from the letter which confirms the sea floor is leaking:

Given the current observations from the test, including the detected seep a distance from the well and undetermined anomalies at the well head, monitoring of the seabed is of paramount importance during the test period. As a continued condition of the test, you are required to provide as a top priority access and coordination for the monitoring systems, which include seismic and sonar surface ships and subsea ROV and acoustic systems. When seeps are detected, you are directed to marshal resources, quickly investigate, and report findings to the government in no more than four hours. I direct you to provide me a written procedure for opening the choke valve as quickly as possible without damaging the well should hydrocarbon seepage near the well head be confirmed.

This sounds serious.

5. A "seep", eh?
I think we could generate enough energy to eliminate our need for oil just by hooking a dynamo to George Orwell's grave, he's probably rotating as fast and hard as a newborn pulsar right now..

9. A seep, , , bigger or smaller than a leak? bigger or smaller than a spill?

10. Maybe the whole seabed will start to leak oil, having been backed up by the cap
I don't think we can cap the whole seabed :(

13. I agree, this is probably very serious indeed

The seabed is leaking methane and with the largest ever known pool of methane just under that seabed.

12. BP said 5K per day originally
Edited on Sun Jul-18-10 10:01 PM by howaboutme
BP has been over-promising and under-stating and under-delivering since day one. The original leak they claimed was a 5K per day (did they call it a seep?), only to find out it was at least 50K.

The large existing dead zone in the Gulf was probably caused by numerous oil seepage sites that were never reported.

14. This isn't good, if I understand correctly...
...if the seabed begins seeping oil - from cracks or other damage - that means the relief wells won't work. It basically means there is absolutely nothing known to man that can stop the oil from flowing - at least until the well is completely empty.

Correct?

:(

16. not necessarily true
depends on the depth of the lining breach versus where they will be plugging it - which is as close to the reservoir as possible.

17. not correct
Hugh Moran is correct. If the reservoir is leaking through the well, and if it is leaking through that portion of the well that is above where the RW will intersect, then no problem.

If the leaks are large enough, even if above the RW intersection, it will be a little more difficult to maintain the mud column prior to an during cementing. But still, shouldn't be a problem.
