Woman Pregnant With 2 Babies Due a Week Apart
(July 17) -- A Utah woman is pregnant with two babies, but they're not twins.

Angie Cromar was born with a rare condition called didelphys, which means she has two uteruses. It didn't pose a problem for her previous pregnancies, and the 34-year-old has given birth to two healthy children before.

But this time, she's conceived in both uteruses. During her first ultrasound exam, Cromar and her doctor discovered that she's carrying two fetuses at different stages of development, one slightly older than the other.

"...I'm five weeks and four days in one, and six weeks and one day in the other," Cromar told her local TV station, KTLA.

(snip)

The chances of this happening are estimated to be one in five million. "Probably less than 100, so far, worldwide, have been reported," Terry said. "So she's a member of a small, elite club."

2. I worked in a neonatal ICU and one of the mom's had two
uteruses, but had one baby.

One of our first thoughts was "how much would it suck to be pregnant and STILL be having to put up with your monthly cycle????"

I could see her having two babies, each sperm took a different route, shall we say, after they had sex a few times (within weeks).

3. Biology is your friend
though I doubt she'd have her normal cycle. After all the body does have amazing hormonal changes... that said... this is rare.

Of course I wonder if one baby going into normal labor (hormonal release and all that jazz) will lead to induced labor for the other uterus.

4. Wouldn't the hormones from the pregnancy in the first uterus
stop the menstrual cycle in the second uterus during the course of gestation?

16. You can even get pregnant while you're already pregnant
My father once told me a story about the wife of a co-worker. She'd given birth and was already back in the recovery area when somebody noticed that her belly was still a lot larger than it should have been. So she was rushed back into the delivery room and gave birth to a second infant that was a month short of being full term.

8. Nah.
The hormonal changes to produce labor in one would produce it in the other.

If she gets an oxytocin shot or whether the oxytocin's naturally produced, both uteruses will respond.

That would suck. "Ah, a contraction. It's easing. Oh, wait--now the other one's contracting."

One baby at a time was enough for me. Ouch, ouch, ouch.

10. If they do, I am betting C-Section
:hi:

And I always dreaded OB GYN calls, this definitely would be up there with COMPLICATIONS and no, I cannot honestly say I've seen this before. And the last statement is rare for medics with enough years in the field... even though the day you say that, guaranteed weird call.

13. On the plus side
Many emergency type calls are for women who have not had much in the way of prenatal care. Since she's a labor and delivery nurse with complications, she and the babies will probably do just fine.

14. That is true, to a point
you may also get it from the woman who had all the pre-natal care, that just happens to need an ambulance to get to the hospital... since they live in the boondogs.

That said, 98% Breath, push, breath... I'll catch. It is the OTHER 2% that are down right scary.

9. The first time I read about two uteruses was in the 60 in Life magazine
The woman had her two babies a month apart. I was just a kid but the only thing I could think was, "That would totally suck."

15. Bicornuate uterus. (two horned).
Y shaped.
Dogs and cats have those. I've read about those before.

Rare but I guess they do happen.

(I have a B.A. in Biology so I know just enough to be dangerous, and I've dissected a cat.) :D
