Democrats war against anti-military image
As they condemn the Iraq conflict, they extol the troops fighting it and vow to 'take proper care of our heroes.'
By Mark Z. Barabak, Times Staff Writer
May 13, 2007

Ever since the Vietnam era, Democrats have struggled to overcome a notion the party is not just antiwar but antimilitary.

Now, sensing a chance to shed that image, Democrats are wrapping themselves in khaki and embracing the nation's fighting men and women.

Even as they press for withdrawal from Iraq, congressional Democrats have proposed more money for armored vehicles, shorter tours of duty for Reserve soldiers and expanded programs to care for veterans.

On the campaign trail, party leaders and Democratic presidential hopefuls invariably couple condemnation of the war with expressions of sympathy and support for those fighting.

1. Good--Dems need to be doing this--the time to cede the military
to the Repugs is OVER.

2. This the result of a GOP PR campaign of decades. Dems need to come up with two or three talking
points on this that contrast GOP:

    Military personnel:

  • Pay & equip troops well

  • care for veterans

    War:

  • Use our military rarely

  • and NEVER as an instrument of business

Every time there is a military action, there should be an automatic investigation of who lobbied for it, which PR firms, and how they profited from the war.

It's probably too idealistic to ask, but the businessmen that ask for and get a military action should be tried for treason and murder.

3. Dems have mistaken idea being good on military is thowing money at it and threatening
to invade other countries.

If they want to look tough, bust the balls of insurance, drug, and oil companies.

4. Republican are not pro-military
in the sense they want those in the military well-trained, well-equipped, well-paid, and well-benefited.

They are pro-spending on big, useless things, and they are pro using the military. That's it.

5. I woud say that the Democratic Party do a
contrast and compare with those who served and those who did not. Like a John Murtha against a John Boehner, or a Jim Webb against a Trent Lott and this time don't let the GOP do a swift boat, better make the term Yellow Elephant really stick!
