A Tuolumne County man who was involved in a shootout with California Highway Patrol officers in Oakland early Sunday said he was traveling to San Francisco "to start a revolution" by killing people at two nonprofits in the city, according to a probable cause statement released by police.
It's not clear why those two organizations were targeted except that conservative media commentators often accuse them of having left-wing agendas.
On a June 13 show on Fox News, host Glenn Beck said the Tides Foundation was an organization "using failing capitalism to destroy it." The Oakland Police Department's homicide unit was conducting the criminal investigation of the shooting, and the CHP is carrying out an administrative investigation. The FBI is also assisting.
Williams was scheduled to be back in court Wednesday for a plea entry hearing at 9 a.m. in Department 112 of the Wiley Manuel Courthouse, located at 661 Washington St. in Oakland.

Police have already said that Williams has a history of anti-government and anti-corporation behavior, and a deep-rooted hate for liberal causes. He reportedly ranted at one point about "the way Congress was railroading through all these left-wing agenda items," according to published reports.
The ACLU calls itself the "guardian of liberty," working daily in courts, legislatures and communities to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties that the U.S. Constitution and laws of the United States guarantee everyone in the nation. The Tides Foundation is an organization that facilitates donations to nonprofits.
Both organizations are regularly accused on-air and online of having a left-wing agenda.
Tides Foundation spokeswoman Catherine Coleman said the organization was dismayed when it found out it was a potential target. Coleman said it had never heard of Williams before the shootout and could not speculate about the incident while the investigation is under way.
The foundation, she added, has been mentioned on "right-wing blogs and media." But, she added, the foundation "has never had to deal with anything like this. ... Our staff is our prime concern in this matter and we have taken additional security measures."
