Just what exactly is an al Qaeda FRONT group?
Of course all the headlines are proclaiming that al Qaeda was behind the kidnapping of the American soldiers, but deeper into the story, they'll say it was a front group, or a group associated with al Qaeda.

Is it like the band that comes out first to warm up the audience?

2. Similar to "WMD program related activies".
Vague jargon that appears to mean something but doesn't specify anything.

3. Same as an organized crime front group
A legitimate business that funnels money into a criminal enterprise. In this case, Al Qaeda.

8. Consider what the ISI--the "group" taking responsibility--is.
It's an alliance of Sunni/Salafi tribes that have announced their intentions of producing a Salafist-dominated shari'a-enforcing state. There are a number of 'insurgent' groups (keep in mind that their immediate goal is to oust the US/coalition forces, but that's just step one; we're in the way of their destroying other "infidel" "collaborationist" Sunni groups--to side with the infidel against Muslims makes you worse than an infidel--and then the "polytheist" Shi'a).

One of the groups is the local AQ affiliate. Of the various groups, AQ is (a) the best known and (b) the best organized. It's also the one that uses the most foreign fighters, putting them under an Iraqi flag. This yields "legitimacy" for AQ--it's now for public purposes to be seen as a "legimate" Iraqi "insurgent" group--as well as a source of training, fighters, and money/supplies for the other Salafist groups.

This means whenever there's an ISI strike odds are that it's AQ--not necessarily a correct assumption, but probably the way to bet.

14. A front group is...
...any street level organization that works to spread a certain agenda while secretly being funded by a less pleasant-sounding, larger radical group. It allows the interests of the the bigger group to be met while avoiding the negative publicity that bigger group would garner if it were to advertise itself openly.
