Is there anything in the "health care reform" law that mandates GOOD insurance coverage?
Nowadays, many employers and health insurance providers are passing more of the costs to the individual, and in many cases offering less benefits. For example, they might offer a "low cost" option that has a very high deductible, one that many people would have a very hard time being able to meet on their own. Or they might still offer "decent" plans with low co-pays or deductibles, but offer them at prohibitively expensive premiums that, again, most workers might not be able to afford.

To paraphrase a punchline I heard once, "Everybody will have health insurance...we never said it would be good insurance!"

I know that this is probably still better than nothing at all, better than no health reform. But still, I'm kinda pissed that we had the best opportunity we've had in decades to get some real, meaningful health reform, a chance to at least move us in the direction of a single-payer system, and we seem to have squandered it. How long before we get another chance like this?

1. Depends if you think any plan with a 60% or 70% actuarial can possibly be "good"

2. There was the pre-existing condition's caveat that states
they can't deny you insurance for that, but otherwise, no not much. I don't see anything about high deductibles and a lot of the other crap the insurers pull. The difference is that you might get help paying for the premiums depending on your income, but it doesn't mean you will have access to decent health care.

3. All new policies have to give free check-ups
Screenings for diabetes, breast cancer, prostate cancer, high blood pressure, cholesterol, etc. Kids have to have annual physicals, immunizations, etc. Many drugs will have no co-pay. Birth control will be covered.

The deductibles are set, along with a total out of pocket per year.

There is a lot in the bill that will make sure we get good coverage.

4. No there really isn't.
Since this 'reform' doesn't even get up and running until 2014 it could be many years. People just can't afford this plan. The saving money on health care was for everyone but us.

5. Shut up! Obama hater!
Hater! Just kidding. Obama got no guarantees that coverage would be either affordable or good. The magical market of insurance oligopoly will see to that.
