This OP is in response to another, posted today, about what "white men want". Strangely enough, that thread was started by a woman. The gist was that "white men" wanted a president like John Wayne.
John Wayne was an actor. He didn't write or direct most of the movies he starred in. He was an actor. We talk about him as though he shaped the thinking of a generation. He was a SYMPTOM of the time, not the cause.
The "white men" I know don't want a "John Wayne". They (as I would hope everyone would) want someone who does what they say they're going to do, with no excuses for why what they said they'd do isn't getting done. They don't want the bullshit excuse of "it's worse than he/she thought it was while he was campaigning" as an excuse for not doing what was promised during the campaign in order to garner votes. The political climate in this country has made that impossible for nearly a generation. Today, it's a matter of "saying what is necessary to get elected", and just because we want one candidate more than another we'll excuse the "campaign rhetoric" and promises/proclamations... for what reason, I don't know. It's obviously pandering but we won't call it that. "Our Person Won" is what's most important.
What we're willing to excuse when our candidates get elected emboldens the NEXT candidate to say whatever they want in order to get our votes. Perfect example: How many times have you read the word "pony" in the context of what we expected our newly elected government to accomplish and are impatient or disappointed with?
I'm fucking sick of it. Sick of the finger pointing, and the "they did it too!" bullshit that permeates every single second of political thought in this country today. It seems that every day there are threads comparing Dems to Rethugs and Rethugs to Dems in that very context.
I'm a Democrat with a capital D. Always have been. I've been a lot of things in the course of my working career. Thankfully, I made some decisions early on that helped me go into an early semi-retirement. That said, I support some unions, and some I don't. I know this though... Democrats and Democratic Ideals drew me to this party when I was young, simply because I thought they had my best interest at heart. My best interests and those of the people closest to me...
With each passing day, I'm more disappointed with the lack of continuity of message, more disappointed with the knee-jerk reaction to negative press, more disappointed with the willingness to continue financing and facilitating wars we can't afford and are morally unable to justify, more disappointed with the lack of progress on HUMAN RIGHTS ISSUES IN OUR OWN COUNTRY (I have a Gay teenage daughter), and more disappointed with the whole fucking ball of wax as I see more and more houses in my neighborhood going up for sale with a "Bank Owned" For Sale sign in the yard.
I'm sure glad that we got "Our Guy" elected though!
