The 10 happiest countries in the world ( or nothing rotten in the state of Denmark)
Table: The World's Happiest Countries
Francesca Levy, 07.14.10, 05:00 PM EDT
By and large, rich countries are happier--and that's no coincidence.

Quantifying happiness isn't an easy task. Researchers at the Gallup World Poll went about it by surveying thousands of respondents in 155 countries, between 2005 and 2009, in order to measure two types of well-being.

First they asked subjects to reflect on their overall satisfaction with their lives, and ranked their answers using a "life evaluation" score from 1 to 10. Then they asked questions about how each subject had felt the previous day. Those answers allowed researchers to score their "daily experiences"--things like whether they felt well-rested, respected, free of pain and intellectually engaged. Subjects that reported high scores were considered "thriving." The percentage of thriving individuals in each country determined our rankings. Click here for the full story.

As far as I could tell, Danes don't partake of lutefisk - a wise decision!

We don't do whale and dolphin slaughter festivals last I heard.

I guess you root for the Japanese when watching Whale Wars on the TV?

15. I don't "root" for anybody. I'm just not a hypocrite. Have you
seen how chickens live before their slaughtered on corporate chicken farms in the US? If that's the worst you can say about Denmark, then you're reaching for a very small negative in comparison to the positives.

24.  Faroe Islands
The Faroe Islands have been an autonomous province of the Kingdom of Denmark since 1948. Over the years, the Faroese have been granted control of most matters. Some areas still remain the responsibility of Denmark, such as military defence and foreign affairs.

They even speak another language than Danish.

the Faroe Islands are not part of the European Union. Moreover, a protocol to the treaty of accession of Denmark to the European Communities stipulates that Danish nationals residing in the Faroe Islands are not to be considered as Danish nationals within the meaning of the treaties. Hence, Danish people living in the Faroes are not citizens of the European Union

Accordingly Denmark can do nothing about the whaling even though they want to.

34. Over a million puppies and kittens are put to death in the U.S. every year.
I doubt if anyone here is happy about this ritual killing by a small group of indigenous people who are not legally a part of the country you are intent upon disparaging. Instead of making a point about cruelty to animals, you have just muddied the issue and alienated people. Remind me not to hire you as a PR person for my causes.

And this is coming from a ball buster and pain in the ass.

17. I think the screw Denmark comment
comes from something a little deeper. This appears to be a way of life for this small community and they probably have done it for centuries. To compare this to the commercial whale fishing present and past is really ignorant and INTOLERANT. But as I said I think some other pictures prompted your screw Denmark statement.

Tons of fun for the wife and kid to join in on, too. In fairness to Denmark, this throwback to cavemen populations live on an island that may not be under Denmark control regarding certain laws.

31. The Danes can't do anything about it
I know because my daughter used to date a Faroen who explained

The Danish Govt has no say over local issues. The gruesome harvest history is over 600 years old. The Faroens now are suffering from mercury poison and have increased levels of heavy metals coming from eating the whale meat.

Whaling is banned in Denmark and they are signatories.

This is an autonomous sovereign community. Most DANES object to it as well. The Danes can no more stop this than we can require Native Americans to stop whaling.
