I prefer recommendations to be anonymous for the safety of people who make recommendations. After all, if the Satanic Verses had first appeared on a message board, then people who first recommended it (and not merely the author and any translators) could be in danger.

I presume that it was the content of the message itself, and not the author's name that evoked a homicidal reaction. Of course, the name "Salman Rushdie" is now very famous, but it was made famous by people who hated the novel that, as far as I know, Rushdie never described as anything but fiction. It was the novel that started it all.

I don't know what genres are dangerous. Surely it's not just fiction that's a problem. I also don't know whether there's a minimum length that a message must have before it rises to the level of being considered offensive enough to warrant, in the minds of some people, a homicidal reaction. To paraphrase the actor Gene Hackman in "Mississippi Burning", a lot of folks around here see things differently from us. We agree that there are some things worth dying for. For them, there are things worth killing for. Of course, he was talking about Mississippi, but Rushdie's book was available around the world, and the internet is available around the world. Who knows who might be reading this? Agent Mike, are you there?
