1. Assange is a real American hero....
Edited on Mon Jul-26-10 12:04 PM by mike_c
The kind whose heroism derives from principle, rather than politics, pragmatism, or self-promotion. :patriot:

9. "National security" has been abused beyond the point of
redemption as a rationale for keeping secrets. The Bush administration raised it to a new high (or rather, a new low) and for whatever reason, Mr. Obama's administration has not done enough to increase the transparency he promised.

It is no longer reasonable for the Pentagon to demand that Americans stop asking questions or seeking information on the basis that secrets are kept "to save American lives." American lives are being lost BECAUSE of secrecy, not because we don't have enough. No one's talking about B-2 plans or troop movements here. Reports of Afghan corruption? The existence of black ops "kill squads" and the exploding abuse of the CIA's drone program? Use of hand-held SA missiles on allied troops?

This information belongs to the people, not the politicians and contractors and military leaders who have used secrecy time and time and time again to lie, distort, and abuse the truth. This is how we find out why we should get out of this costly, deadly, pointless war.

59. You mean "The New York Times" - Assange Did Not Leak The Documents Here

Assange is getting all the credit and appreciation here.

Ellsberg made a principled and conscientious decision to leak the Pentagon Papers, and deserves credit for that. All Assange did was to publish what he was given by the guy who is getting ZERO recognition.

and somebody released facts related to the very ugliness of that war I wonder what I'd think?

I'm a pacifist who was influenced by Gandhi's writings at a young age. I protested the Vietnam War in the streets and assisted in draft avoidance counselling.

But this 'crusade' in the Middle East does not resemble the WWII cause. Not now, not as far as I can understand, even thought the Islamofascists are brutal and fighting for a regressive anti-humanist motive. They also despise Jews and would murder them all if they could.

39. Imagine if we had a free press?
All the lies would have been revealed BEFORE the wars started.

Colin Powell could have been a whistle-blower. He knew they were lying. But he didn't have the courage.

Julian Assange has a social conscience. All he's doing is the job the press should be doing. But I think whistle-blowers do not trust the media anymore. Now, they have somewhere to go.

A :kick: for transparency and the truth.

49. Do I DARE To Find Some Solace Again? I Wonder, But I Assuredly Will
support this man and his organization for what they are trying to do!! As one who is a LONG TIME activist from the Viet Nam era, it feels refreshing to see this! Still, knowing all that has gone on for much too long, I wonder if this is yet another stance on "shaky" ground!

I'm not beating any drums yet, but would LOVE to start MARCHING with a VERY LOUD VOICE!! I'm tired, fed up and sick to death of what I've seen happening to this country at least since Ronnie Ray-Guns! I realize things have ALWAYS been kept secret, but NEVER hidden quite so well since the "Pentagon Papers" in my lifetime!!

I clearly recall my astonishment when I KNEW how very much LBJ et all had been lying to us. We formed a front and fought back with a vengeance back then. Haven't seen anything like it since then!

Do I DARE think this will make a difference?? I no longer use the word HOPE as part of something I wish for, but I do try to WISH from time to time!!

Assange... and those who surround you... we NEED YOU more than you might know! America needs you, and it's ironic that it's taking a person from another country to shine a bright light!

51. Here is this American response:
Wikileaks, keep doing what you're doing.
You will receive no condemnation from me.
This nation's government has been addicted to secrecy for too long. Organizations like this are the antidote.
Pour it on.
Keep it coming.
The corrupt horde that governs us are stung.
Sting them again.

The sad part is that we're such a nation of degenerates, that I'd not be that surprised if he decides to "off himself" via CIA agent "assisted" suicide.

Over 100 centuries of civilization, and we're still stuck in the same exploitation of others via force & warfare paradigm.

57. Real Men of Genius
Today we salute you Mr. Wikileaks Director Guy. From your hidden lair you reveal the truth about our nation's tyrannical underbelly. (voice over - Billions and billions) With aplomb and an unwavering belief in truth, you serve up tens of thousands of documents that we can't find on the Google. (voice over - How does he do that?) You cut through the mainstream media smokescreen like a chainsaw through warm butter (voice over - I really like waffles..) May your nerve never falter and your sources never dry up (voice over - Ooooh deep throat) So, for the good of us all, keep pushing the truth. (voice over - MrWikileaksDirectorGuuuuuy)
