When was the last time a Republican Administration oversaw a balanced budget

and what was the top tax rate at that time?

Serious question.

I thought maybe it happened in the Nixon/Ford era but that seems to not be true.

I guess it was Eisenhower with a top bracket of 90%.

Am I wrong?

2. Nixon/Ford lead us to recession with inflation that the right them blamed on Carter

(deja vu?). I am guessing Eisenhower, but he was not a career Republican so he does not count. Before him were Hoover and Cooleridge= Great Depression. Boy, for a party that likes to talk about fiscal responsibility, the GOP serves serves up some bad budgets. Unneccessary military spending has been a big problem for many of them.

4. you are right. It looks like there was 1 year there when the top rate was 71.75%

that the budget was balanced by Nixon
