A note to all who are complaining about border security.
Here is a clip from an email I received from my son who is visiting his brother in Sicily for 2 weeks.

Well, We made it! 1500 miles and about 3 days. We didn't have much time to spare but we spent a few hours in several different places. We had very little problems and saw some incredible things. The trip started at my brothers house in Catania, Sicily. It ended at his wifes apartment in Baia Mare Romania. We left Friday night about 10pm. We arrived at the apartment about 9pm Monday night. We would have been here sooner but a lady at the Hugarian boarder gave my brother a hard time. She wanted to see his Italian work permit for some reason. He ended up calling someone he works with to scan and email it to the boarder people. It took about two hours. It was F'd up because they weren't going to let him into Romania or back into Hungary. He was stuck there until he came up with some paperwork that proved he was allowed in Italy for the past 8 years.

The one they gave the trouble to HAD his US Passport, Work ID, and has made this trip many times before, but it didn't work this time! All I can say is it's a damn good thing he could reach someone whre he worked to get the info they wre insisting on seeing.

BTW, they were going to Romania for the wedding of my son's stepdaughter & then would be returning to Sicily and the youngest son & his 2 kids will be returning home here to Ga.

2. I've read lots of posts whre people say why can't we be like europe? They can travel anywhere
no problems. I actually thought that myself. At the very least, I thought all you ever needed was your passport. This obviously proved me wrong. Even worse was that they weren't going to let him INTO Romania NOR back to Hungary! I don't know what they were going to do with him, but they were going to eep him right there until they saw those work papers! Pretty scary thought!

4. If someone says, 'they can travel anywhere'
they're probably talking about the part of Europe that's in the Schengen area: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schengen_Area

I notice that Hungary is in the Schengen area, while Romania is a future member. That might be why crossing that border is more difficult than others.

5. The EU comparison comes up a lot.
Traveling between EU states is like traveling through the US. Getting IN to an EU state from outside is difficult - just like here.
