Cyber Mastermind Arrested: Suspect Accused Of Infecting 12 Million Computers
The FBI told The AP in Washington that a 23-year old Slovene known as Iserdo was picked up in Maribor in northwestern Slovenia 10 days ago, after lengthy investigation by Slovenian police, FBI and Spanish authorities.

His arrest comes about five months after Spanish police broke up the massive cyberscam, arresting three of the alleged ringleaders who operated the Mariposa botnet, which stole credit cards and online banking credentials. The botnet – a network of infected computers – appeared in December 2008 and infected hundreds of companies and at least 40 major banks.

ANYTIME they nab a guy who sends out viruses across the world wide net, I applaud standing up, because I have been hit by two nasty viruses in the last year. I hope they put him away for a long, long, long, damn long time!!

1. Amature.
Hell, Bill Gates has infected WAY more computers than that with something called "Windows".

3. Higher software standards, more reliable OS capturing the most market share
Oh yeah, that would be a nightmare. :sarcasm:

7. A more reliable OS? I have yet to find one when it comes to personal computing
maybe you got some examples?

Yeah, yeah, Linux, the greatest thing since sliced bread. Install linux for an average computer user and see what happens.

And most of the software I use written for windows is great quality, so I'm not understanding your point there.

11. Oh come on. I have an HP mini that came with Linux installed - No contest on reliability.
I haven't rebooted it yet. It has a solid-state drive and just keeps running. I get 9 hours of off-charger time on it. The Linux is a flavor of Ubunto and nothing I've ever worked with touches it for reliability. I've been working with computers since 1978 or so (Apple II, pre-II+) and pretty much every variety that has come around in the home to business-micro (VAX 4000-ish) department. In that 30+ years, the UNIX machines have always out-performed and been far more reliable than the Windows boxes. Money talks, and Gates has it.

Windows isn't better, it is just what the pointy-haired bosses insist on having. Don't give me the "Windows is better" bullshit, because it isn't. And yes, I'm on a Windows box right now (I expected you would ask), but that's because it was the only 17" laptop I could get from HP 4 years ago and it has been a pain in my ass on way too many points to list.

14. I don't remember the last time windows crashed on my because of Windows
I keep my home computer on all the time because I connect to it remotely. Never crashed on me and it's only rebooted when I want to reboot it. So you linux might perform well in this area but windows performs just as well.

And no, it's not pointy-haired bossess insisting on Windows. It's the users that work for those bosses because no matter how hard you want to pretend Linux stands no chance against windows in the user friendly-ness department. Got a device you need to hook up? Plug it in and chances are windows will take care of the rest. If it doesn't a driver for it is virtually guranteed.

13. Indeed, sir or madam, it used to be you had to know some basic principles to operate a computer.
I think that it would be quite good if people were taught to use best practices in computer safety, whether they run Linux, Windows, OS X, BSD, or whatever.

If you run Windows, that happens to mean an extra layer - all sorts of spyware tools and anti-viruses. But if we didn't open attachments that indicate "I love you" in a Virtual Basic script, or download screensavers or movies or applications from unknown sources, there would be a lot less computer infections in the wild.

15. UAC is a big step in that direction. Though many people still ignore the popups
thats why any network I manage everyone is a limited user and they don't have access to the admin acocunt.

6. The Amiga was WAY ahead of Windows and at least had an edge on the Mac.
Edited on Wed Jul-28-10 11:40 AM by HopeHoops
It was the first serious multi-tasking desktop machine. The Mac was three years behind it on that one. Gates dismissed multi-tasking until it was evident that Commodore and Apple were years ahead of him.

On Edit: To be fair, the Atari ST also had multi-tasking at about the same time as the Amiga, but it wasn't as powerful. It was still a good machine.

10. Yeah, well, I'm still pissed at Commodore.
At a time when it was essential that they distance themselves from the perception that they were a game machine company, what do they do? They hire a new CEO named, not kidding, MAX TOY. What the FUCK is up with THAT?

Still, the Amiga was the best of show. I still have my two (500 and a 2000) and they both still work.

5. Welp, I expect Microsoft will be offering him a job momentarily.
That's what they did with the kid who invented the Sasser virus.
