If you didn't get your free pony yet...
There are still some out there...take Molly for example-

"I run a horse rescue and Molly is the hardest horse for me to part with. She is just the sweetest little mare. She needs to gain someone's trust but once she has it she is just perfect. She is sound and healthy and UTD on everything. She knows Parelli level one games. We have ridden her but she doesn't like it so this is why we are adopting her out as a companion horse only."

2. So sad. There's so many animals who need homes right now due to the recession
I hope that Molly finds a good one.

3. oh, what a beauty! my daughter keeps saying she wants a horse. she is 11...
of course she wants a horse. and while we do live in an agricultural area, we do not have room for a horse. and i certainly don't need ANOTHER task added to my list of things to do. i often thought maybe she could go help out at a farm to be around horses and see what work is really involved.

you rescue horses!! that is so awesome.

4. no, I don't...used to when I was little and we had a small farm
you'd be amazed in the backwoods of the country how many animals need a good home..

Older goats, ponies, ducks....

8. Having her "intern" somewherre and take care of horses would be a great learning experience
for her.

She'd learn the amount of work involved (which should help you out if you decide to get one for her), the expense (not to be ignored but included in the decision-making process), and be better able to participate in the decision.

I encourage you to do what your instincts are telling you - involve her. Then, you both decide what you want to do. Everybody will be happier, icluding any horse lucky enough to come and live with you.

5. In my semi-rural area, horses were being given away like manure last year.
Some were abandoned to blm. People simply couldn't afford to feed them when the economy plummeted. Local rescues are full of horses needing adoption.

I've been able to hang on to mine by spending nothing on needed repairs and maintenance on my place. So...the weedeater and harrow are broken, but I didn't pay to repair them, and weeds have taken over. Two sheds taken down by a windstorm are still laying in unsightly piles where they fell. Fences needing repair are giving way. Shingles blown off the roof have not been replaced. Hydrants broken in last winter's deep freeze have not been repaired or replaced. The rotten front deck, which needs to be torn down and replaced, still stands.

But, despite 3 paycuts and 3 cuts in working days in the last 18 months, the horses are still eating.

13. Bless your little heart---really do wish I could help you with all the chores
you are not getting done for lack of money. People like you know the priorities in life. May things get better soon.

6. It is a national issue and I have in the past
posted that the people who like to toss rhetorical ponies are free to pay royalties on the word by adopting a few, or at least sponsoring one. They got much mileage out of the word, and yet they don't have a bit of care for the animals themselves.
