Joe McElderry, winner of UK's x factor, comes out as gay
Edited on Fri Jul-30-10 11:46 PM by dsc

http://www.mirror.co.uk/celebs/news/2010/07/31/joe-mcelderry-i-m-gay-x-factor-winner-comes-out-in-daily-mirror-interview-115875-22452854/
Joe McElderry has revealed he is gay, declaring: “I’m really happy, I now know who I am.”

The 19-year-old X Factor winner made the brave decision to come out in an emotional interview with the Mirror, just a week after telling his mum.

Joe has always denied rumours he was gay, but insisted the reason was he didn’t know himself until recently.

He added: “I’ve had time to think about things. I wasn’t attracted to anyone anyway, male or female. It never really entered my head I was gay. But I just know. It’s how I feel.”

end of quote

I think this is amazingly courageous given his age and the fact he is literally just starting out in his career. Plus he just told his mom and dad a week ago. I hope his career and he is OK. It is still amazing to me to see such young people coming out like this. Honestly, at 19, I was terrified of being found out and literally did about anything to prevent it. Amazing how things have changed. editted to fix link

6. I looked up Will Young
and have to say that is impressive. I had assumed he was much older than Joe but he was only 22 himself.

7. have you seen this ?
and this is all live, no lyp synch.i hope he comes out with more similar type music in the future. i'm not into some of the stuff he has done before. it doesn't show the talent he really has as in this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bm5mzLo2t5s

and yes, he was young. the difference with here and the UK is that there weren't some hate groups who were trying to stop Will from winning like they did with Adam Lambert

3. I don't know why, but I especially loved the fact that a discount offer for the new Prince album
was in the text you pasted in to the OP.

Prince is now a hardline gay-basher(apparently, he feels he can't play with Wendy and Lisa anymore because of it), after spending years posing for photos like THIS:

13. Jehovah's Witnesses
HE actually goes door-to-door in Minneapolis handing out The Watchtower.

That faith does SO many wonderful things to our nation's pop stars:

15. I think daddy Joe might have had something more to do with that.
But point well taken, it really doesn't help them.

"How can you just leave me standing?
Alone in a world so cold? (World so cold)
Maybe I'm just too demanding
Maybe I'm just like my father too bold..."

16. It wasn't much a secret, but good for him.
I don't really buy the whole "I had no idea who I was until just last week!" It's just a nice way of inching around the fact he was denying it for so long for the sake of his career.

Not that I blame him in the slightest - certainly not at that age.

Fortunately, it doesn't matter much in the UK. Plenty of gay entertainers are highly successful there.

I remember a television show I saw maybe six years ago when I was living there. It was a Saved By The Bell type of set up, with what looked to be 13 and 14 year olds. One of the episodes was about one of the main characters coming out.

At 13 or 14.

I immediately looked over and told my then bf that there is no way it would ever air in America, certainly not on daytime tv, and definitely not on a show for tweens.

They're so far ahead of us in that regard.

18. admittedly that did seem a bit of a stretch
but he is only 19. I could see not being sure. At his age, though I really should have known, I felt it was the girls in my area that were the problem. Of course, that was ludricrious but all the same I believed it. He also hadn't told his mom until just a week ago.

21. The UK is a very different place...
Edited on Sat Jul-31-10 11:38 AM by BolivarianHero
Outside of Northern Ireland, Christian fundamentalism is so anemic there that even regions that are Tory strongholds, such as the rural southeast, overwhelmingly accept evolution. You have to go to London and its high population of Muslims to find a place where support for creationism surpasses 30%. And thankfully, Western Muslims who reject evolution are far more willing to embrace scientific explanations of other phenomena than are their evangelical Christian compatriots.
