As anywhere, Germany has it's problems, however there are things that they do here that I like to see us start to think about doing.

More bike friendly big cities, an emphasis on public transportation, especially train travel nationwide. There are so many things to see in the US that most Americans haven't seen yet. More Solar technology. I've never seen so many Solar panels on roof tops ever! This isn't sunny Southern California. If they can do solar panels here, so can we. Trash separation - Plastics, Glass, Paper, General - not just at home but everywhere.

Those are some of the things I'd like us to do more of.

From Berlin... this is devilgrrl signing off.

1. I hear you on all counts
Germany has its own set of problems, of course. But there's much we could do that they already do.
I'm in Europe most of the year. My wife is German, and she has never wanted to live here in the USA,
although she has many friends here and like visiting. But when it became clear she would not live here,
I requested (and got) my overseas posting 30 years ago, and haven't looked back.

I'm in Washington/No. Virginia now. My wife is flying over to meet up with me for 3 weeks in New England
on Friday--can't wait!!

the serious lunatics are immediately recognized as such. ;-)

4. The Netherlands, Denmark or France are more to my taste, but I really liked Germany.....

...... LOVED Berlin and Hamburg, and was pleasantly surprised by Frankfurt. Cologne was the only city I really didn't like that much. ...... And yes, the public transit-oriented, bike-friendly lifestyle is so refreshing. ..... Although I strayed into a bike lane in Berlin and nearly got mowed down.

12. It just felt kind of cold to me.....It's hard to explain.
Everyone warned me that people in Hamburg were cold and unfriendly, but I found the opposite to be true. I just found Cologne to be a bit cold and brusque, but it's hard to become an expert on a city in 3 days.

6. Umm....
I like to see us start to think about doing.

We have been "starting to think about doing" things for a couple of decades. "The good fight" has gotten us to life in the 4th Reich. We need to think just a tad more aggressively.

9. love Berlin
and I am often tempted to leave 'the good ol' USA' and fight the good fight over there. There are so many simple things that could be done to turn things around that are done in other countries, as relates to conserving energy and building infrastructure for alternative energy, not to mention moving forward with a progressive social contract, that the 'non-negotiable' lifestyle folks over here have just refused to even begin. It is very disheartening and getting to be past the point of no return I'm afraid.

10. We were encouraged recently when our trash recycling changed...
to include so much more than before, about three months ago. Now our garbage for a family of six and sometimes seven has been reduced by at least one full trash can and recycling has increased significantly. Of course now we have a little more work (rather, the 12 yr. old son in charge of trash/recycling does, LOL).
