The "Mosque at Ground Zero" is approved by NYC...BUT it turns out
it's a community center, like the YMCA of Jewish Community Center, and it's several blocks away from the ground zero site.

It will be a huge building, and while there will be a Mosque in it, there will also be a memorial to the 9/11 victims as well as an inter-faith chapel, various stores and restaurants, etc.

This is a bullshit story, much like Chelsea's "Multi-Million Dollar" wedding...
The media knows better, but they love the story so much more than the truth.

K&R.

2. Property owners doing what they want with their property?
That's antithetical to the Republican way, isn't it? All property uses must be vetted and approved by the Republican Central Committee before the owner can even begin the process of getting permits and approvals from local land use agencies.

4. It'll have a prayer room in it, mot a mosque
Not snarking at you, it's just that a mosque is a specific kind of place of worship, like a cathedral.

5. The mosque story is nonsense. But Chelsea didn't have a
multi-million dollar wedding? It may be newsworthy or not, and it may be the 2-3 million most reported, vs. the 12 million (trillion?) Fox reported, but it seems unlikely that calling it a "multi-million dollar wedding" is "bullshit."

6. Joy Behar had wedding planner folks on yesterday
Edited on Tue Aug-03-10 11:26 AM by LostinVA
And one said the wedding was "low six figures, and one thought maybe $1 million, because the tent was at least 300K. Joy thought that amount was crazy. But, both planners said it was NOT a fancy wedding at all -- it was very modest, including the food, and it is almost impossible to spend 2+ million on a wedding unless you are royalty or a zillionaire who has crazy things, which Chelsae didn't.

14. What's the angle here? Why are people invested in it one way
or the other? The Clintons aren't rich? $600,000 wedding. Million-dollar wedding. "Multi" million dollar wedding? They're rich. We're not supposed to think they're rich? It's "bullshit" to suggest this was a lavish wedding?

The whole flavor of protesting the amount sounds overly defensive to me. These are rich people who spend a lot of money on themselves. Whether that implies something about their character or not is up to the individual, but arguing about whether they're $600,000 wedding rich or $3 million wedding rich seems a bit silly.

I don't see any way to read it except that both people who don't like the Clintons and people who do, think that there is something negative about it. Conspicuous consumption by American political elites during a catastrophic recession may or may not actually be worthy of critique, but anyone very concerned about how much it cost one or the other obviously feels that it matters.

9. Facts schmacts
Don't you know it'll be full of those darn brown terrist types! It's a slap in the face to those that died, regardless of the fact that this mosque also lost members on 9/11 (brown people don't count).

It's a bullshit story and has been since day one.

12. Did you realize the building was closed because it was damaged on 9/11?
Is ground zero only the WTC? I think if it was part of the destruction then it is ground zero. Bin Laden is directly responsible for that building being sold.

And even if I had, who cares? Let them build their community center there. I think it's a great idea.

Is that it?

19. The proposed center is 2 blocks away from "ground zero" - this entire thing is bullshit.
The big problem was taht the building now standind there was old - there was some idea that it might have historic interest, but the city approved its demolition today.
You can stretch this any way you want, but this building had nothing to do with 9/11...you might as well say that I'm near ground zero - I'm only a few hundred miles away.

20. Stupid rightwingers probably don't know that there has been a Muslim community center in that area

since at least 1970.
http://www.masjidmanhattan.com/Default.aspx

They probably don't realize that there were Muslim victims of 9/11 who died at Ground Zero as well. The "lowest common denominator" crowd is in denial that Muslims are every bit as much Americans and New Yorkers as everybody else in Manhattan.
