and try to detect any whining tone that might be there. In which posts would you find that there is whining tone, and in which posts would you fail to detect a whining tone?

but reducing the positive rating of a thread does cost something, then incentives are arranged so that nobody will be tempted to think "portraying everybody else's threads as bad is a way for my threads to be good." Not everything is relative.

expression, and not make it more difficult to provide negative feedback than positive...unrecommend is as equally valid a response and some ways may be more important to provide a counter view - isn't that a core democratic strength?

Start a thread, rec it, and put it at the top of the Greatest Page. All in less than a minute.

That way, they could take over DU's homepage and control the message.

Is a high post count a better sign of forum purity, or is a positive or clean slate, devoid of any alerts and locked threads, a better indicator of who would be more capable of unreccing posts when they see the need arise?

What would be a better form of meritocracy than that?

It could work.

Another idea would be to set things up so that users with a long history and lots of recs get DU Trusted User status, and among other things, get to unrec, but if you get your posts deleted by the mods too many times, or otherwise get slapped for breaking the rules, you lose your unrec privileges.
