My last post for a few days. Why? (PHOTOS - DIAL UP WARN)
Dr. DemoTex is visiting the lookout tomorrow! Yippee! She has been in Portland for a few days and will drive down tomorrow. I told Nick today - he is crazy excited.

Rooster Rock Fire update: RR is 50% contained with a total containment date estimated for 8/10/10 at noon. I saw no smoke today from Rooster Rock (45 miles away). The visibility was the best it has been all week. I could see the Three Sisters all day. The burn acreage is listed as 6134, up 4 acres from yesterday - but there were reports of 6300 acres last night. Rumor is they used napalm pingpong balls for the backfire yesterday (Google it - it is for real).

Here are some pics from today:

Down there, it is hard to see the forest for the trees. Up here, I see ALL!

Ground Hog Butte Sand Pit OHV/ATV recreation area four miles due north of my lookout.

"The Potholes"

Antelope Springs Butte with the power-lines on Pine Ridge in the distance.

This dust devil in "The Devil's Garden" is almost always there.

Looking across the top of China Hat to the Newberry Volcano Rim a couple of hours ago.

South Sister and Broken Top as seen across the top of Lowullo Butte (with its sparse pines).

And of course, the pics are wonderful, esp. the sunset ones...

4. Wow--those are striking photos (as usual)
Hey, if you're acting on the doctor's orders, who am I to question it?

And, btw, Napalm Pingpong Balls would make an excellent name for a rock band. :)

11. Fantastic fotos as usual, DemoTex -
be SAFE up there. Our fires have been "managable" this year in the Interior but I well recall 2004 when we had 6,200,000 (Yes, MILLION) acres burn. We relied on a lot of Outside firefighting help that year!

Thanks for what you do, and give Mrs. DemoTex my best.

From July 2004 in Fairbanks at about 1:30 a.m. (we don't do sunsets much in summer):

15. Those are beautiful.
The smoke had dissipated enough yesterday that my grandson and I spent the day hiking in the area around Paulina Lake. We had a wonderful day, although keeping up with a healthy ten yo kicked my decrepit ass.

16. That last photo was intense for me
I climbed South Sister with a couple of friends on September 4, 1980.

Wow, it's been almost 30 years.

We camped out the night before at Sparks Lake before the trek.

10,358 feet. There was a frozen lake in the crater near the summit. You could see Mt. Rainier in Washington and Mt. Shasta in California and all the high peaks in between.

That was a hell of a good day. Thanks for the inadvertent reminder.
