Fed-up attendant curses out fliers, exits JetBlue flight by emergency slide
Source: USA Today

Then, ABC says "one of the passengers apparently got out of his seat to grab a bag from an overhead compartment. The flight attendant walked over to tell him he had to sit down. The two reportedly got into an argument and somehow the flight attendant got hit in the head with either the bag or the compartment door."

That's when things got interesting, according to the various media reports.

The Wall Street Journal writes the attendant -- Steve Slater -- "demanded an apology from the passenger, but the passenger refused to give one. The two argued back and forth before the passenger directed an expletive at Mr. Slater, official said. Mr. Slater then got on the plane's PA system and directed the same obscenity at all the passengers, and added that he especially meant it for the man who refused to apologize, the official said."

"Then," The New York Times writes in its City Room blog, Slater "activated the inflatable evacuation slide at service exit R1; launched himself off the plane, an Embraer 190; ran to the employee parking lot; and left the airport in a car he had parked there." Additionally, the newspaper notes that "on his way out the door, he paused to grab a beer from the beverage cart."

I guess that's one way to quit one's job.

1. That's a little extreme, I think!
Good thing the plane wasn't in mid-air when it happened!

8. Most spectacular merging of "Network" and "Airplane?"
His career is over and he'll be lucky to get away without criminal charges but what an exit!

I read in a different news account that he also grabbed a beer from the galley before jumping on the emergency chute. :P

5. He's my Hero!
...after 20+ years of being a Flight Attendant (ended that almost 5 years ago)...and being
cursed at...spit at...things thrown at me...chased up (and down) the aisle, while being
yelled at...yelling FAGGOT at me...having a crazy hide in a lav until everyone (except me
in the back and one of the pilots up front) were off the plane and then jump out and
start poking me in the chest (because, 6 hours earlier, I didn't give up my ink pen
while I was writing, to him to do a crossword puzzle)...having my personal food, drink,
water bottle, hand lotion, etc. taken from the galley...having my tote bag gone through...having
my luggage tossed on the floor and left in the aisle (they knew it was mine because they saw
me in the terminal and knew I had an American flag on it as a tag!)...having my hands slammed
in multiple overhead bin doors...and on and on and on.

Now let me say...most passengers just come and go...some were super nice...I cried with several
and held many hands due to births and deaths...I gave CPR to a dead person...I gave oxygen more
times than I could count and held foreheads while adults and kids vomited...I was on diversions for health issuses too.

But the worst...that small group that is out of control...that should be arrested.

I understand fully where he was coming from.

Steven...you are my hero.

6. Other than the inevitable delay it caused...
I like it. I've thought about doing that as a passenger at times. People know how it works on these flights, yet they still dick around and screw off and make all of us that get our asses sat down ASAP so we can leave have to wait longer than necessary. Passenger etiquette is something that is taken for granted. I've had some cranky flight attendants for sure, but frankly, they are there for our safety first and foremost and the running of a tighter ship (as we humans can't really be entrusted to do the right thing all the time as I've discovered!).

7. Wonder how long the plane was then delayed.
That is an epic way of quitting though.
