C-Span Repub caller: Only a fool would have thought this would be easy in Iraq!?!?
His point was that nobody should have thought invading Iraq would be easy and be over quickly. We're in it for the long haul and need to stay the course, etc.

Only problem, as a subsequent caller pointed out (also Repub since it was all Repub at the time), it's the Repubs who were saying this, everybody from Rummie (they'll greet us with flowers) to Bush ("Mission Accomplished"). The logic didn't escape this second Repub caller. If only a fool would have thought this or said this, ... Complete this sentence.

Duh? Let me think.

2. It Would Have Been Easy To Have Stayed Out
Not going there and starting a war that hasn't accomplished anything to secure the world, the U.S. or resources would have been WAY easier.

Only a fool would miss this obvious fact.

4. Exactly.
The point is not that the Iraq war was was right, and it's just an argument of how long we should stay. It's that the world would be a much better place if we wouldn't have gone at all.

3. Then why "Mission Accomplished"? Why not "Remember: Mission Not Yet Accomplished"?
If everyone knew it would be so hard, then why did we have mission accomplished on a banner? Why did we make so much of toppling the statute of Saadam?

I agree with him that nobody SHOULD have thought it would be easy - however, our govt and many many people did think it would be easy.

6. C'mon, This Is A Cakewalk...
That's what Wolfie said. Rummy promised we'd vanquish these ugly A-rabs in 60 days, 90 days, MAX. Long haul, my ass. These morons were running around with their "Mission Accomplished" and yellow ribbons and claimed in early '04 how they had totally destroyed the Talliban and had Iraq on the ropes. But damned if that "librul" corporate media didn't ruin things. They didn't keep telling us lies of how great things were going...they didn't follow the script.

Now if we're in this for the "long haul", then obviously we're gonna need to keep paying billions over that time...thus surely these "patriots" will gladly fork over 25 or 50 percent of their income to pay to keep those evil A-rabs from flying airplanes into their heads. Or they should be running to the nearest Selective Service office and signing up. Ya mean they aren't? :sarcasm:

War has been portrayed as a TV show...a great adventure and our corporate media couldn't give us enough. We were "wowed" with those bunkerbusters and astounded by the live reports in the rush to Baghdad...never with any thought of what would result from this invasion. Despite the warnings of those who understood the culture and politics of the region, they're still pushing this simplistic narrative that only gets complex when things don't play out the way its scripted.

I would love to find out about all those schools we've rebuilt...how many are operating? How many have not held classes cause the children are being kept home for fear of their lives. I caught Bowen in one spin/lie when he claimed Polio had been wiped out thanks to our assistance. True, through UN/AID, American vaccines became available...but that was 20-30 years ago...not since we came charging across the border in 2003.

9. The fools..
.. were the ones in the administration who asserted it would be easy.

Revisionist bullshit is all the Republicans have. Denial is an important tool the human mind uses to shield itself from the awful truth when someone's most cherished ideas and beliefs turn out to be wrong, wrong, wrong.

A lot of Republicans are so deep in denial right now they may never get out, like the stupid assholes that thought we needed to be in Vietnam and could have "won" if we stayed. Nothing you can do about that sort of idiocy, just shake your head.

10. Wasn't there video of McCain on DU's front page a few days ago
saying in 2002/2003 how Iraq would be easy?

Didn't Cheney say we would measure the time there in weeks? (I think we're around 200 weeks now, no?)

Rummy said something snarky like, "6 days, maybe 6 weeks, I doubt 6 months"
