History is going to judge the United States very harshly
After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the United States was the lone superpower in the world. We were the richest, had the strongest economy, most technologically advanced, and had the strongest military. We could have done so much to make the world a better place. We could have worked with the United Nations to end genocide in places like Rwanda and the Sudan. We could have helped alleviate poverty in Africa. We could have made real strides to combating AIDS and other epidemics throughout the world.

Instead, what have we done? We sat by idly while hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians were slaughtered in Africa. We've engaged in meaningless wars simply to satisfy Pappy's son's desire for revenge and bloodlust. Instead of reinforcing freedom throughout the world, we've actually managed to LOSE some of our freedoms in our very own country.

When future historians look back on this era, we are going to be judged very harshly. Not only did we not take advantage of our unique position to help make the world a better place, we made it far worse.

1. Just as long as 'we the people' also do the same.
It is like living in a madhouse.

2. History should judge us harshly
In our fight against the Soviets, we Sovietized ourselves. We became what we were fighting. Now that the USSR is gone we are taking their place, and we even have party loyalist secret police wannabes(freepers), just like they did, to comtrol the populace by making us afraid of our neighbors.

3. Spy magazine was saying that in the 1990s
They tracked instances where the US was becoming more like the USSR had been. It was sort of tongue-in-cheek but not completely.
