here's the cnn take on President Obama upholding the Constitution
Edited on Mon Aug-16-10 09:58 PM by spanone
'By weighing in on a proposed Islamic center near ground zero, President Obama gave the GOP an attack vehicle and diverted attention from fellow Democrats' campaign themes. Sen. Harry Reid broke with the president. '

GOP seeks political gain from ground zero Islamic center issue

3. It's just a game--I was livid when I saw Chuck Todd on some
morning show, and that was all they were talking about--not whether there was a Constitutional issue, not whether there was a question of what was right, but what the polls say and what the optics were. "What's Obama thinking bringing up this issue--it's not a winner?"

Gee, I don't know. He took something like an oath to protect and defend the Constitution and is the president of Muslim-American just as much as any other Hyphen-Americans--maybe he thought he had a responsibility to do it? He has a responsibility not just to the public reaction here, but how this country is represented abroad. It would be really neat if instead of discussing a meta-issue and opinion, the media went in for journalism: here's the issue from both sides, this is what got said, here's the facts. Maybe see if there is actually a context regarding this issue that is above campaign-politicking and gamesmanship. Maybe some points need to be made even if they are unpopular.

I really think the media needs a runaway bride or some sharks or something they can cover more effectively....

4. Someone should ask Republicans just how far away from
ground zero it would be appropriate to build a mosque? 1000 feet, 2000 feet, a mile, 10 miles, let's have a number or shut the fuck up.

7. Apparently, that's a pretty big number.
According to some people, at least 900 miles. The "fine" people of Murfreesboro, Tennessee are fighting plans to build a similar community center there. I think the "Ground Zero" argument is just a front for the same old bigotry.
