Dems pan Google-Verizon neutrality deal
By Sara Jerome - 08/16/10 02:33 PM ET

Four Democrats urged the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to write strict Internet service rules rather than expand on the framework put forward by Google and Verizon.

In a letter, Reps. Edward Markey (D-Mass.), Anna Eshoo (D-Calif.), Jay Inslee (D-Wash.) and Mike Doyle (D-Pa.) suggested the proposal might not have consumers in mind.

"Rather than expansion upon a proposal by two large communications companies with a vested financial interest in the outcome, formal FCC action is needed," the letter said. Eshoo has Google's headquarters in her district.

The Google-Verizon proposal "reinforces the need for resolution of the current open proceedings at the commission to ensure the maintenance of an open Internet," the letter said.

In particular, the letter saw inadequacy in two pieces of the Verizon-Google proposal: exemptions for managed services and for wireless services from strict net-neutrality rules.
