Sharron Angle Campaigned Against Black Football Jerseys On Religious Grounds: Color is Evil
Nevada Republican Senate candidate Sharron Angle once partook in a campaign against a local high school's use of black football jerseys, arguing that the dark color was ungodly and wicked, Bill Roberts of Nevada's Pahrump Valley Times recently reported.

It was Homecoming of 1992 and Nevada's Tonopah High School football was seeking to depart from their school colors, specifically in wearing black jerseys instead of the usual red and white. The uniform change was meant to be a display of solidarity; the year before, the team had suffered an embarrassing loss at the hands of a rival that had, up to that point, been winless. The Homecoming game in 1992 was their chance to make up for that plaguing defeat in front of the whole school, and they wanted to do something special to build the team's spirits.

Enter Sharron Angle and her color-crusading cohort.

While some detractors made the argument that adopting the new color was unacceptable simply as a breach of tradition, Angle -- who was in the midst of an eventually successful campaign for school board -- and others argued that wearing black jerseys was closer to sacrilege.

"I cannot quote scripture as they did to justify their point but the gist of their argument was that black as a color was thoroughly evil, invoking the supernatural and especially the devil," Roberts reports. "Whichever argument prevailed, school administrators caved in and prohibited the Muckers from wearing the black apparel."

The black uniforms were then confiscated and held under "lock and key" by the administration, which refused to compensate the team for the money they had spent acquiring the jerseys.

Though Sharron Angle sought to downplay the nearly 20-year old incident at a press conference Wednesday, claiming that she had "no recollection of the controversy or any position she may have taken," such a stance would not be entirely uncharacteristic of the deeply religious Senate candidate that Angle has shown herself to be since capturing her primary victory in June.

From the "the beginning," Angle has described her campaign as divinely inspired, and said in July that she believed God had called on her to run for the U.S. Senate. She has also repeatedly made clear her positions on abortion -- that it shouldn't be accepted even in the cases of rape or incest -- and has expressed skepticism over the true necessity for a separation of church and state. Earlier this month, Angle painted the Democratic agenda as a "violation of the First Commandment," because it supposedly created idolatry in making the "government our God" with entitlement programs. Just a day later, she filled out a questionnaire of her religious views that uncovered her dislike of gay adoption, her support for the clergy taking part in politics, and a promise not to take money from any PAC or corporation that supported gay rights.

Which goes to show how unpopular he is. I think the latest poll showed Reid up by about 2% which was inside the poll's margin of error.

13. you're talking about the people who voted for Gibbons after the alleged
attack on a woman and possible business conflict of interest. We'll see-I've already seen one bumpersticker for Angle on a senior woman's car. It looked like she was old enough to be on social security, so she either buys into the shite or she's one of the "I've got mine screw everyone else" people.

Angle is saturating the boobtube with ads holding Reid responsible for the mortgage crisis, even though it was Little Boot's deregulation policies coming home to roost. She's got an ad stating how she wants to protect social security and lock the box. I wind up yelling at the TV-calling her a liar. Well, I was yelling at the TV, now I just put it on "mute."

She's got her handlers and it appears for the public she's doing a 180--"beware of wolves in sheep's clothing." And, that's what I think she is. All questions must be pre-screened-who'd a thought, a female Little Boots.

And her views on choice, makes her no friend of women. And, I agree, I think she's loco and adheres to the voices in her small mind. We'll see how many Nevadans buy into her rhetoric.

If she is elected, I'd love to move, but my family is here. I don't want to live around that many ignorant, clueless people.

And, her deregulating bullshite. Little Boot's allowing his friends to police themselves is what got us into this mess. She is a deregulating, anti-labor, anti-woman, corporate whore in my book. There is nothing new in her rhetoric that hasn't been done for the past eight nightmarish years of *. She's even got the "God" pitch down (and that's what scares me the most).

5. This article points out she is not fit to serve in Congress
"expressed skepticism over the true necessity for a separation of church and state"

If that is the belief she holds then she can not swear an oath to the Constitution and therefore she can not be a member of Congress.
If she swears an oath she is then violating the Constitution and could be subject to charges of Treason.

16. There is nothing darker than Angle's soul, if she has one.
I know all Christians do not think or behave alike. But right wing, conservative fundamentalist Christians always blindly vote for anyone who is a religious fanatic, even if the candidates are totally incompetent in every measurable way. Bush professed to be a 'born again' Christian and received all the fundamentalist Christian vote, even though any intelligent, thinking person knew he was a dolt, a fraud and a liar. If I ran for office in a highly religious area all I would have to do to win is out-Christian my opponent. And the more times I said I was born again the more votes I would receive from religious fanatics.

I know several right wing Christians and the only thing they consider about a candidate is if they are 'born again' or a religious fanatic. That's why the right wing freaks like Angle and Palin are so popular among religious extremists.

23. I note that holy roller Angle has short hair, wears earrings, and has a gold wedding ring.
1 Timothy 2:9 "Likewise, I want women to adorn themselves with proper clothing, modestly and discreetly, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly garments."

For someone using Christianity as a tool to control what other people wear, she seems to have a lousy understanding of it herself.

And yes, folks, that's from the NEW Testament, so she can't even weasel out of it by claiming that Jesus "superceded" those laws, like many fundies enjoy claiming when you point out the anti-shellfish laws in Leviticus.

Many fundamentalists would disagree with me on that, as they say long hair is feminine (unless worn by Jesus or Mel Gibson).

28. The point of the statement, in context....
...is that women are supposed to have hair that is unadorned and be undecorated. Timothy was a "fundie", and was railing against the corrupting influences creeping into the early church. One of those negative influences was women who cared about their looks. He wanted them to be plain and unadorned. If your hair is styled, you're sinning.

Of course, I should have just trotted this out and been done with it: "But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence" (1 Timothy 2:11-12).

The same book also bans women from holding positions of authority over men. I'm pretty sure a seat in the Senate qualifies.

Fundie hypocrisy on display, once again.

30. My ex-partner is a BIG football fan...
We talked about football uniforms a few times.

Black uniforms are considered more intimidating than lighter, brighter colors.

His favorite team is the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (do not ask me why- there are many things I was not meant to know :yoiks:)
and he thought they got more respect when they changed their red-and-orange uniform for the primarily black one.

I'd made him Father's Day shirts out of the logo fabrics (with the little footballs for buttons :P) and he very kindly 'splained me why he preferred the newer, black/red/white scheme to the brighter orange/red one.

I must admit I thought the Miami Dolphins aqua and white uniform was "pretty".
You don't want your obscenely overpaid big hulking bruisers to look 'pretty'; you want them to look professional and scary as hell.

if the sunshine is intense.. The players heat up enough, from all the padding they wear, without having a heat absorbing color like black.
