Shepherd, shot 6 times by Ohio owner, finds a home at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary

Toledo, OH - Sarge, the German shepherd shot six times by his owner, has endured a rough road. After surviving his caged shooting, Sarge had to undergo intense scrutiny by animal behaviorists to determine if he needed to be euthanized in light of observations of the dog's fear-based aggression.

Sarge's many supporters, including his Facebook fan page, "Justice for Sarge", have been cheering the abused dog on, signing petitions, and pleading for his safety. On Thursday, their wish was granted when the Toledo Municipal Court gave the Toledo Area Humane Society permission to transfer the dog to the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary.

Sarge will be moved to Best Friends at the end of the month, most likely accompanied by John Brown, Training and Behavior Coordinator for the Toledo Area Humane Society. The hope is that Brown can spend several days in Utah with Sarge, helping him adjust to the Best Friends staff.

The no-kill sanctuary would ultimately like to rehabilitate Sarge and find him a new home, but if that does not happen, he has a safe home for the remainder of his years. Kudos to the Toledo Area Humane Society for working so hard for Sarge and for doing what was necessary to give him a bright future.

Sarge was shot with a .25 caliber pistol on July 9 allegedly by his owner, Lawrence Mick, and a friend, Adam Collins, while he was inside his cage.

The dog had bullets in his head, neck and chest when he was rushed to an emergency clinic the same day of the shooting.

The shelter has a record of multiple bites by Sarge eight days before he was shot. Mick’s girlfriend has said the dog bit her on July 1 while she was seated on a chair.

Tyson, the South Toledo dog who survived two gunshot wounds, received a hero's welcome Saturday while making his first public appearance since undergoing eye and bullet-removal surgeries.

A neighbor of the Lucks, Eric Skowron, 34, of 1108 Rochelle Rd., and his girlfriend, Alisha King, 29, of Lambertville, have pleaded not guilty to animal-cruelty charges for the shooting incident.

Surveillance video apparently shows the couple luring the dog from the Lucks' yard to Mr. Skowron's house up the road. Twenty minutes later, Tyson is seen stumbling home bloodied and exhausted.

"Even now when I watch the video and I see that dog collapse under that bush, it just rips my heart out," Scott Walter, 47, of West Toledo said at the rally. "It sickens me. It sickens me to see a dog suffer."

My partner and I had once been attacked by 2 Rottweillers. The person was breeding dogs for fighting. I don't know what to think.

If the animal is that aggressive and a threat, have him put down HUMANELY. These rednecks need to have the snot beat out of them for this.

Sounds as if the poor dog can be rehabilitated, as Michael Vicks' were. I think they had to put down two -- one deemed dangerous and the other gravely ill.
