Would the mosque/community center controversy be this bad if NYC had rebuilt at Ground Zero
New Yorkers will obviously always be aware of what happened. However, it's been almost a decade, and the WTC site is still pretty much an open wound. If the Freedom Tower were completed already, would it not allow people to heal, and move forward?

1. Hint: Most New Yorkers HAVE moved forward

The former World Trade Center site is not hallowed ground, nor is the area around it. This is yet another manufactured controversy by the right which did not exist until Pamela Geller started fanning the flames of hatred.

Salon has the time line for this fake issue: http://www.salon.com/news/politics/war_room/2010/08/16/ground_zero_mosque_origins

3. Have the families moved on?
Do you ever get over the death of a child or spouse or sibling?

I doubt it.

4. You don't get "over", but after a time, you heal and move on
In my experience, that takes about five years.

8. Well I still miss my cat.
And she was old and sick too. I've never lost any person close to me...knock on wood. I sure would like to get a gauge on the 9/11 families though. Those are the one set of opinions that I think could move this argument.

2. Some kind of reverse cargo cult mentality
Gotta leave that spot empty so the airplanes don't come back?

Construction has been ongoing.
Freedom Tower Begins to Rise at the World Trade Center Site
January 11, 2010

The History Channel still loves to show the documentaries on 9/11 and hoards of tourists still flock to the site everyday, but aren't you curious to know what exactly is happening in the hole? Well, we happen to be typing this from about 50 feet away from the site, with a clear view towards the rising beams and cranes that signify that the World Trade Center is rising again.

Construction on some of the planned structures has reached above ground level, so that's a very positive sign. The most advanced work is pictured above (taken from the sidewalk), with the World Financial Center forming a glass building backdrop to contrast with the rough look of what will be Freedom Tower.

It's starting to look really impressive: http://www.rebuildgroundzero.org

For some reason, a lot of people think that area is still a gaping pit.

9. It probably wouldn't have been an issue if it weren't an election year.
Remember, 911 is like patriotism, abortion, same-sex marriage and taxes. A gold mine. They don't care about the mosque, they need emotional triggers.
