Letter: Construction of Mosque in New York City appalling
Letter: Construction of Mosque in New York City appalling

I was living in New York on Sept. 11, 2001. I was supposed to be at work that day in our office in downtown Manhattan. I lost three friends that day. I find it reprehensible and unconscionable that anyone would consider allowing or desiring to build a mosque in the vacinity of our worst tragedy in history.

I realize that we have freedom of religion in this country, but what insensitive groups would even contemplate building a community center and mosque anywhere near the shrine that their followers caused to be created? It is a spit in the face to everyone that was impacted by that event.

Anyone who would allow this should be chastized severly. I am an American citizen who is appalled by the even thought of this happening. I would not blame New York Fire Department if that new building caught fire or blew up and no one could make it on time to save it.

and btw it is "vicinity", not "vacinty". I think that gives a very good clue to the type of person who wrote this. An inability to spell correctly seems to be one of the great common denominators among morans.

2. But it is okay,
as my son puts it, for corporate America to build on top of a grave ("shrine that their followers created")but not for a community center 3 blocks away from one.

3. The reality on the ground (video link)
Those who think they have something to gain politically by opposing the mosque, as well as those who simply don't have the kind of first-hand knowledge of the area of the proposed center, would have you believe that the proposed Islamic Cultural Center will tower triumphantly over Ground Zero. I know the block well where the Islamic Cultural Center is to be built. Yes, it's downtown, and yes, it's "near" the Ground Zero site in terms of geographical proximity on a map. But in the context of the dense urban landscape that is lower Manhattan, two blocks might as well be twenty. And the site for the Islamic Cultural Center is rather obscure relative to the World Trade Center site. To help folks see what I'm talking about, and hopefully in the interest of adding a measure of rationality in the ongoing debate, the other day I created a video slide show, using Google Maps' "Street View" feature. It's an annotated, virtual walk around the block from 45 Park Place, the site of the proposed center. It gives viewers a sense of the reality of the location, as one experiences it as street level, and show just how out-of-the-way the site is relative to the World Trade Center. The link to the video is:

5. Those stupid people will spread hate and cause more terrorism. Stupid, stupid people. We are in a
huge war to win the hearts and minds of Islam and we will be in this war for the foreseeable future. What happened to citizens of a country at war stepping up and sacrificing for said war.
