Middle School Segregates Class Elections by Race
Thinking about running for eighth grade class president at Nettleton Middle School in Nettleton, Mississippi? Well... are you white? Because only white kids are allowed to run for president. Black kids can be vice-president, though! But only black kids.

1. Yes, it is hideously wrong
But it's also Mississippi so that explains a lot.

4. Damned brown eyed people
trying to take over the world from us... Vive les Bleu!!!!! ;-)

I think you're referring to the Jane Elliot classroom experiment, which was fascinating.

7. LOL - our teacher did that experiment with us, too...I was in the Fairfax County School system
from 68-70 and in 3rd grade, a lot of the teachers copied that experiment with their kids. I was one of the kids.

I have green/gray eyes. So the blue-eyes who got privileges the first week rejected me and I was lumped in with the brown-eyed kids. The second week, the brown-eyed kids rejected me, except for a few who were kind to me perhaps because they learned empathy during their week of being treated badly.

It was a very good learning experience for me regarding prejudism and one that has never left me.

3. Fuckin' Mississippi
just when you think they're starting to pull thier backward asses out of the slime another of these stories comes around.

Having spent a number of years in Alabama though I can't say I'm surprised.

9. Where would you get that thought?
I just go on the assumption that I will run into backward asses, and I when I don't, I'm pleasantly surprised.

10. I think your view is the right one
A couple of years ago I was driving through North-Central MS and I stopped at a small motel for the night. I went across the street to a little bar/grill and was amazed to see black and white customers interacting and having fun at the bar. It was college football season so it may have had something to do with it.

I was very pleasantly surprised as it was far different than what I used to run into when I was down there 15 years ago. I was hoping that it was a sign that things were changing, maybe it was and it's just going at a glacial pace but stories like this OP really are disheartening.

11. What was the age of the crowd?
I'll bet it was 20-somethings watching the game on the big screen. If you went down the street to the cafeteria for the early-bird special, it would be something out of the '60s.

13. That's what surprised me
the ages were pretty varied lots of middle age (40ish) white guys and it was a pretty rural area.

I honestly can't even remember the name of the town anymore, it was that small, but it really made a positive impression on me.

12. I went to Meridian once when I lived in Al...I walked /hitchhike back
to Montgomery the next day when the group I was with wanted to stay there nother week. I left Al never to return 2 yrs later. I won't list the stuff I went through there again..but I chased off crossburners in front of my house with a 12gauge pump.
