Malia Obama is almost as tall as her parents

She just turned 12 years old and is already 5'9! Might runway modeling be in her future?

"Malia just turned 12," the President said (to which someone in the audience shouted "Good luck!"). "She's my baby. Even though she's 5' 9", she's still my baby."

2. She might grow a couple more inches but then she's probably done.
I have a 12 year old who seemed to be on about the same schedule of the big growth spurt (has to do with puberty)then it'll taper off.

What is it with people and tall kids. It's like they can't wait to put a ball in their hands.

It's kinda creepy. "My but you're a tall one. Hold these "balls.""

23. oh I agree actually -
I guess I was just reacting to the "modeling" comment. But playing sports doesn't mean one CAN'T be an academic as well. Being involved in activities - be it sports, music, dance, etc - is GOOD for kids to develop mentally and emotionally as well.

FWIW - my momma played basketball - she was 5'10" by 8th grade. My daughter played for a while until she became enamored of dancing (I really tried to discourage that choice.) My niece did play and was quite good until she ripped her knee. My older son can't walk and chew gum at the same time - so no bball for him, though he was quite good at soccer - and now since he followed in his older sisters footsteps and beyond in the dancing department - he's planning to become a professional ballet dancer. My youngest son - 11 - has always been one of the biggest - he's 5'3" or 4" (hard to tell with so much hair now) and weighs in at 199. (Yes, he's heavily muscled). So even though he's a dancer as well, it most assuredly helps him be a phenomenal football player... He plans to use football to get scholarships - in addition to academic ones - so he can become a vet.

Again - participating in activities is GOOD for kids - and especially physical activities these days! Oh - and I've always been of the opinion that you keep your kids involved in activities and it helps keep them out of trouble! lol - and teaches them a sense of responsibility and teamwork.

14. I see that stuff in my own family.
My 12 year old niece is taller than me,and I am six feet tall. I think it is our abudance of food. Kids get these growth spurts and eat like horses and bam gain 6 inches in height. Just my own humble opinion.

15. Being a tall kid is weird.
Edited on Fri Sep-03-10 10:43 AM by Codeine
I was a fraction shy of six feet in the fifth grade. Everyone assumed I would be a basketball player (the fact that I have the motorskills and coordination of a monkey on meth didn't seem to register), but what actually happened was I stopped growing at 10. I'm maybe half an inch taller at forty than I was at ten.

20. I am 4 foot 12 and 3/4 inches. I always say five feet. BUT
my two sons are over six feet. My husband was just under six feet Now when the youngest was 12 years old, he was almost six feet. In fact when we were waiting for a bus some lady came up to him asked him what time his bus was leaving. He had on a light blue shirt and dark blue pants, similar to the bus uniform. He looked at her and said "lady I'm only 12 years old I can't drive a bus". The lady's eyes popped wider and she walked away. I always remember that. Some children just grow faster. Since he was 12 and he is now in his fifties he has only grown two more inches. He is six foot two.

So some kids do grow tall faster than others but once they hit their height they usually stay that tall the rest of their life. She is an extraordinary and attractive young lady. And it really irratates you the way they talk slop against these two young girls. The same as they did Amy Carter and Chelsea Clinton. But messed their collective shorts when the press posted about the drinking and partying of the Bush twins, who at the time were over 21......

24. My 5'8 19 yr old always towered above her friends
Even back in elementary school. Couple that with her bright strawberry blonde hair and you could spot her a mile away. She had forgotten a homework book one day and had me drive her back up to school to "sneak" back into the school/class. When I asked her later if she was seen, she said "I just turned my head so maybe they wouldn't recognize me". Ummm, you are one of the tallest in the school and the ONLY one with that hair color...

To this day, she will tell people she is 5'7 cuz she feels 5'8 is "too tall". Except on her drivers license, she was worried it was illegal to put the wrong height. I told her that an officer is not likely to pull out a tape measure on the side of the road.

26. 5'9" is too much for someone just turned 12. She might very
well grow to over 6 feet. After a certain height, it becomes a handicap.
You know, too much of a good thing is no longer good.

41. No it's not.
You really think 5'9" is too tall for a 12 yr. old?? You must not get out too often. Our schools are full of tall kids, from 12-14,15 and then they tend to even out. I was 5'9" by 7th grade and never grew another inch (just played lots of basketball and volleyball). My sister, OTOH, didn't reach her full height until she was in her early 20's and is now right at 6'. And yes, she is LOVELY (and it makes me sick, ha!).

42. Beautiful girls.
Wish I'd had a growth spurt like that. I am several inches shorter than both my parents.
Dad was 200 lbs., 5 foot 11, mom was 5 foot 7, 130 lbs. I had uncles on both sides that were six foot two or six foot three.

I'm five foot three. My daughter's father is six foot SEVEN. He was too tall to be drafted in Vietnam.

Wanna guess how she turned out? She's five foot three, same height I am, but she is what they used to call "willowy". Long legged, long waisted, a miniature version of her dad. As a result she looks a lot taller than she is.

I figured she'd be at least six feet. But no, you never know how genetics will come out.
