Tea Party Takeover of GOP: It’s Worse Than You Think

GOP Politician Confirms
What Was Long Suspected:
Republicans Intentionally
Feed the Racism, Anger, and
Paranoia of the Far Right
By David Corn
Mother Jones Online, August 4, 2010,
via Progressive America Rising

It was the middle of a tough primary contest, and Rep. Bob Inglis (R-S.C.) had convened a small meeting with donors who had contributed thousands of dollars to his previous campaigns. But this year, as Inglis faced a challenge from tea party-backed Republican candidates claiming Inglis wasn't sufficiently conservative, these donors hadn't ponied up. Inglis' task: Get them back on the team. "They were upset with me," Inglis recalls. "They are all Glenn Beck watchers." About 90 minutes into the meeting, as he remembers it, "They say, 'Bob, what don't you get? Barack Obama is a socialist, communist Marxist who wants to destroy the American economy so he can take over as dictator. Health care is part of that. And he wants to open up the Mexican border and turn into a Muslim nation.'" Inglis didn't know how to respond.

1. Yeah, and some the left would sit on their hands, hold their breath, and
let these people come into power.

2. If he was a person of any principle and honor
he would have countered that thinking with what was more honest and truthful instead of feeding it. He shows himself as just one more unethical politician open to selling himself to stay in power, putting baser self-interest above what is right and honorable.

Also ask Bob Bennett, Arlen Spector, and Lisa M. about that Tea Party thing.

6. He did show principle and honor, refusing to pander to the Tea Partiers -- so he lost the primary
Read the linked article. He knew that the Tea Party types wanted him to call Obama a socialist, but he refused to do so, because he thought it wasn't true. He exhibited principle and honor by refusing to throw the Tea Partiers their red meat, although he was espousing conservatism and disagreeing with Obama on substantive policy issues.

The result was that he lost the Republican primary to a wingnut who had no qualms about throwing red meat to the crowd.

Uh, opening the Mexican border would turn the nation into a Catholic state, if I remember the facts about most Mexicans.

9. Who stands a better chance in the general election ...
... a teabagger nutjob spouting a bunch of fringe right rhetoric, or a mainstream Democratic candidate?

If elections are indeed determined by moderates & independents, won't the teabagger nutjobs hurt the GOP?
