Breaking CNN! Feinstein/Schumer Presser/No Confidence in Gozalez!

VIDEO & TRANSCRIPT AT.......

At a press conference moments ago, Sens. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) called on the Senate to hold a no-confidence vote on Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.,,Transcript:,, FEINSTEIN: I join with Sen. Schumer in saying I think the time has come for the Senate to express its will. And that will is simply to say that we lack confidence in Attorney General Gonzales. I don’t like saying this. I very much regret saying it. I want to say exactly the opposite. But in view of what I know, I can’t.,, Whether it was the torture memo, whether it’s Guantanamo, whether it’s Geneva Convention, whether it’s U.S. Attorneys, whether it’s I don’t know I can’t recall, a department as major as this, I don’t think the American people are well served. I’m hopeful this can be worked out. But there comes a time when you have to say what you think, and this is what I think.

2. Thank you Senator Feinstein
Now can you give Carol Lam her job back so we can get rid of Doolittle ASAP? I've written to her about this and so far have gotten no response. At least she stepped up to the plate on the attorney firings and I commend her for it.

this is the problem, the AG gets to appoint US Attorneys, not the Senate

This is more about putting pressure on Bush to get rid of Gonzo and no confidence is in the rules of the senate but RARELY used... so this is also for the hsitory books

They are also working their way, I think, to impeach and indict which they can do to any cofirmed member of the President's cabinet

On edit the role of the US Senate is to cofirm US Attorneys

4. It's a clever way of sending a signal.... If he's like Wolfowitz he
probably wont get the message...but it's a good start!

8. But can't the Senate appoint
her to an interim position before the new AG picks someone?

13. No US Attorneys are the prerogative
of the Executive

What the Senate can do is appoint her to a job investigating the whole mess with a Senate Committee, (Watergate had oodles of lawyers, for example), But in this case that would be a conflict of interest

All she can do right now is be a witness

9. The Senate can only go this far
at this time, the House impeaches, the senate tries the case. They have so far voted no confidence. The impeachment ball is in Madame Speaker's court.

5. It's about damned time!
They all need to go ON THE RECORD as expressing a lack of confidence in this dimwit. Maybe the Pretzeldent "has confidence" in him, but he's the frigging A.G. of the UNITED STATES, not RatBastard's personal attorney, and THE PEOPLE'S REPRESENTATIVES have the right to express their (and our) disdain for his incompetence.

7. Damned straight, get them all on record
This is not only a very clever move, it's also long overdue.

10. What does a "no confidence" vote mean?
Is that equivalent to a censure or does that mean Gonzales is on the way to being impeached?

14. Toothless.
Edited on Thu May-17-07 02:43 PM by TahitiNut
If it passes, it does nothing. It it fails, it does harm. This kind of toothless posturing is a horrible substitute for demanding that elected and appointed officials comply with the law and "protect and defend" the Constitution.

15. It's more pressure on Gonzo...and Norm Coleman just added his name to
the Repug list of those calling for his resignation. They sure seem to be taking it slowly...but given what these people are like...who knows the threats they are under. Not only from the BFEE but the Corporatists like GE.
