Are flags at half staff in your neck of the woods?

On 15 May, all the flags in front of the city/county building, fire stations, and police station were at half staff (Bozeman MT) and I have no idea why. I've searched the local papers, the governor's office, the county and city government websites and can find no reason for this. Do you think this might be Falwell related?

7. I think it was only for a week or so

They were flying regularly on the morning of the 15th, but were down at half staff that afternoon.

I've never heard of ordering flags flown at half staff over someone like Falwell.

It would be a sickening outrage.

If they WERE at half-staff and it was because of Falwell, I'd sooner never fly the flag again.

P.S. You're in Bozeman? I wish I'd known - we stayed over in Bozeman last summer while on a road trip.

A Massachusetts soldier is believed to be one of those held hostage in Iraq
after a weekend ambush south of Baghdad. 25-year-old specialist Alex Jimenez
of Lawrence is listed among those missing after the attack, in which four U.S.
soldiers and an Iraqi translator were killed.

An al-Qaida front group has taken responsibility for the ambush and claims to
have captured the missing soldiers. Their status and location remains unknown.

Rep. William Lantigua of Lawrence was standing outside the home of Alex Jimenez's
father in Lawrence today, urging the media to leave Jimenez's friends and family alone.

"Alex is not a celebrity," Lantigua said. "He's just one of hundreds of thousands
in the armed forces, and we don't want him to be portrayed as a celebrity."

Lantigua told reporters that U.S. officials had confirmed that a corpse left behind
by the attackers was not Jimenez. Earlier in the day, news reports indicated that
the Pentagon had still not identified the fourth dead soldier.

According to Lantingua, Jimenez had been in the army for four years and planned
to re-enlist, despite his father's opposition to the war.

Jimenez's father was unavailable for comment. Lantingua said Ramon Jimenez had traveled
to New York Tuesday night to wait for news of his son, who had been stationed at Fort Drum.

Lieutenant Andrew Bacevich graduated from Boston University in 2003 with a major in Communications.
He was the son of Boston University International Relations Professor Andrew Bacevich, who himself
served in the Army.

The elder Bacevich was the author most recently of "The New Militarism: How Americans are Seduced by War."
He has described himself as an old-fashioned conservative opposed to the American military intervention in Iraq.

In an e-mail to the family, the younger Bacevich's captain says he was killed south of Samarra,
on a main highway.

His unit had orders to look out for white sedans, and one came down the road. The soldiers stopped
the car, and Bacevich was killed instantly when one of the passengers detonated himself.

Westminster soldier dies in Iraq

Army First Lieutenant Ryan Patrick Jones of Westminster was killed in Baghdad Wednesday when
his vehicle was struck by a roadside bomb, the US Department of Defense announced today.

Jones, 23, was a popular and well-known graduate of Montachusett Regional Vocational Technical
School in Fitchburg.

A cocaptain of the school football team and a National Honor Society student, Jones won the
school's Purple and Gold Award, which goes to the student who displays excellence in many
areas, including academics, trades, extracurricular activities, and community or work
involvement, said Superintendent James R. Culkeen.

"The staff certainly took the news hard. He was that type of student," said Culkeen.
"Everybody knew who he was."

WORCESTER, Mass. (AP) --

A soldier from West Boylston has died in Iraq.

Twenty-year-old Army specialist Kyle Little was killed Tuesday by a roadside bomb
while on his second tour of duty in Iraq.

Little's mother, Shelley Smith, tells the Telegram and Gazette in Worcester that her
son was newly married and that he and his wife were anticipating the birth of their
first child in November.

Smith says her son was a huge Red Sox fan and had a tattoo of the team's logo on his arm.

Little's father, Mike Little, lives in North Berwick, Maine. The governor of Maine, John Baldacci,
has flags in his state will be ordered flown at half-staff on the day of the soldier's funeral.

Little was assigned to Fort Benning, Georgia.
